Life
Nikoloudi began dance lessons with Koula Pratsika and studied piano and advanced music theory at the Athens Conservatoire. After the Second World War, an international dance seminar in Zurich introduced her to leading European dance figures. She performed solo recitals as well as working within Pratsika’s artistic circle, developing the close relationship between musical expression and bodily movement that she later described in interviews.
Her theatrical collaborations included the Art Theatre of Karolos Koun, the National Theatre, the Greek National Opera and other stages. In 1966 she founded Chorika with the composer Nikiforos Rotas. The group developed an ensemble practice in which performers worked with voice, music and movement together. Teaching remained a major part of her career: she worked at Pratsika’s school and its successor, the State School of Dance, where she also served as president. Chorika was relaunched in 1995 for the first Kalamata International Dance Festival, renewing the public presence of her work. She died in Athens on 17 December 2004. Her career joins performance, choreography and the patient training of people able to listen, speak and move as an ensemble.
Works

Her early collaborative work included group movement for Fate of the Mycenaeans in 1956. A major theatrical contribution followed with the choreography for the 1962 version of Aristophanes’ The Birds at Koun’s Art Theatre. The production brought together Koun’s direction, Manos Hadjidakis’s music and Yannis Tsarouchis’s designs; its Paris presentation received recognition at the Theatre of Nations. Nikoloudi’s movement became part of this shared theatrical language.
Chorika, founded in 1966, gave sustained form to her research into choral passages. Performers trained across speech, music and movement, responding to the demands of a collective dramatic voice. These were modern artistic interpretations of ancient texts, shaped through contemporary rehearsal and performance. Her work also extended into ballet: the Greek National Opera records Genesis in 1978 and Symphony No. 7 in 1993, both presented at the Herodes Atticus theatre. The 1995 Kalamata revival and surviving filmed performances offered later audiences further encounters with her approach. In her interview, the image of singing with the body helps explain how musical education remained present within movement. The words describe her own artistic experience and provide a short, supported entry into her Greek voice.
Legacy in Greece today
Her work gives Greek learners a concrete way to distinguish related words: χορός can mean dance, while in drama it also names the chorus; χορικό is a choral passage. These meanings connect language with the ensemble practice she developed. Festival and broadcast archives preserve traces of that practice.
Read the page’s sentence «Η ομάδα μιλά με μία φωνή» alone, then with another person. Emphasise one word and describe the change in effect. Write two Greek sentences using χορός, one about movement and one about a dramatic group. The quotation offers her own Modern Greek words about music and the body. B1 describes the graded passage and these supported speaking and vocabulary tasks.

A line to remember
Αισθανόμουν την ανάγκη να τραγουδήσω με το σώμα μου σαν ένα τρίτο όργανο
Aisthanómoun tin anánki na tragoudíso me to sóma mou san éna tríto órgano
I felt the need to sing with my body as a third instrument
