Maria Kentrou-Agathopoulou

Μαρία Κέντρου-Αγαθοπούλου

1930 · Thessaloniki

Maria Kentrou-Agathopoulou is a Greek poet and prose writer closely associated with Thessaloniki. Since her first collection in 1961, she has explored memory, everyday encounters and the passage of time. Her stories and poems move between familiar city life and unsettling images. The school-anthologised poem Ο μοτοσικλετιστής (The Motorcyclist) offers a vivid meeting of street noise and imagination.

Life

Maria Kentrou-Agathopoulou was born in Thessaloniki in 1930 to parents from Asia Minor. She received her schooling in the city, which became a lasting setting for her literary work. Her first poetry collection, Ψυχή και τέχνη (Soul and Art), appeared in 1961. She is associated with Greece’s second postwar poetic generation.

Her literary formation included sustained contact with other Thessaloniki writers. In a 2020 interview she recalled showing poems to Zoi Karelli in 1963 and being encouraged towards greater clarity and concreteness. Alongside writing poetry, she contributed to literary magazines and wrote critical essays, especially about poets. Reading other writers became part of her public work as well as a resource for her own language.

The collection Η σκοτεινή διάρκεια των ημερών (The Dark Duration of Days), published in 1993, received the Nikiforos Vrettakos Prize in 1994. Prose expanded this career: Συνοικισμός σιδηροδρομικών (Railway Workers’ Settlement) appeared in 1998, and the stories Η παραίτηση (The Resignation) in 2002. The latter received the Academy of Athens’ Petros Haris Foundation prize in 2003. Her poems have been translated into several European languages. Her membership of the Thessaloniki Society of Writers and the Hellenic Authors’ Society places her within wider literary networks.

Works

Kentrou-Agathopoulou often begins with something close at hand: a street, a room, a remembered voice or an ordinary interruption. Her writing lets such details open onto time, loss and human vulnerability. Poetry and prose share this attention, while giving it different shapes. A brief image can hold a whole emotional tension; a story can follow the pressures of daily life.

Ο μοτοσικλετιστής (The Motorcyclist), from Θαλασσινό ημερολόγιο (Sea Diary, 1981), shows how observation becomes an imaginative encounter. A noisy rider first disturbs the night; later the speaker imagines him in an impossible scene above the city. The young man’s wish for a photograph brings his appearance, desire and mortality together. The official school anthology asks readers to separate the poem’s real and imaginary levels. Its changing viewpoint is central to the reading experience.

Her prose includes the narrative Railway Workers’ Settlement and the story collections The Resignation and Οι μικρές χαρές (Small Joys, 2005). These titles bring neighbourhood, personal decisions and modest sources of happiness into focus. Her essays extend the conversation to other poets. Across these forms, familiar words can acquire unexpected weight through their position, rhythm and relation to an image.

Legacy in Greece today

Kentrou-Agathopoulou reaches readers through her books and the official Greek school anthology containing The Motorcyclist. For a small language task, start with the adapted passage, then consult that poem with support. Make two columns headed ακούω and φαντάζομαι. Put a sound you can really hear in the first and an image it suggests in the second. Write two original Greek sentences and join them with ενώ to mark the difference. This develops observation, comparison and careful reading without treating a poetic scene as biography. The B1 level applies to the adapted text; the original poem invites slower reading and discussion.
