Costa-Gavras

Κώστας Γαβράς

1933 · Arcadia · France

Costa-Gavras is a Greek-French filmmaker whose dramas turn questions of power, responsibility and justice into suspense. Born in Greece in 1933, he built his professional career in France and worked across languages. His Greek interviews provide listening material, while his films invite scene descriptions in Greek. A Greek cultural connection does not mean that every soundtrack is in Greek.

Life

Costa-Gavras was born in 1933 in Loutra Iraias, in Arcadia. He moved from Greece to France in the1950s, studied cinema at IDHEC and learned production through assistant-director work. His first feature, Compartiment tueurs, appeared in 1965. A murder mystery set around a train journey, it brought together performers including Yves Montand, Simone Signoret and Jean-Louis Trintignant. Its investigation and suspense already point toward the narrative tools he would carry into larger political stories. The ensemble also placed his early work firmly within French cinema.

His career developed between Greek historical memory, French production and English-language cinema. Z gave international audiences a story rooted in the Lambrakis assassination through Vassilis Vassilikos's novel, a French-speaking cast and music by Mikis Theodorakis. Later collaborations extended the questions of power and responsibility to courts, governments and workplaces. Actors and writers became recurring partners in giving those institutions a human scale. In February 2026, he returned to Thessaloniki for tributes and a presentation of Z at the Olympion, speaking to ERT3 about cinema and his work. The return brought the film into the city whose history had inspired it, decades after its first release.

Works

Z, released in 1969, follows the investigation of an opposition figure's death and the resistance encountered by those seeking answers. Its Greek historical reference is central, while the dialogue is predominantly French. The film received the Cannes Jury Prize in 1969 and two Academy Awards at the 1970 ceremony. L'Aveu followed in 1970, turning political coercion and a forced confession into drama. In both films, the search for truth moves through institutions whose procedures can reveal or conceal violence.

Missing, an English-language film from 1982, approaches political disappearance through the search of relatives for someone they cannot find. It shared the Palme d'Or that year; Costa-Gavras and Donald Stewart received the adapted-screenplay Oscar in 1983. Music Box, a1989 courtroom drama about a daughter defending her father against war-crime accusations, won a Golden Bear in 1990. Adults in the Room, from 2019, returns to Greek and European politics. Le dernier souffle premiered at San Sebastián in 2024 and reached French cinemas in 2025. Its French-language exchanges between a doctor and a writer turn toward care, fear and dignity at the end of life. Suspense and conversation offer different rhythms for examining how public decisions enter individual lives.

Legacy in Greece today

Listen to a short Greek interview with Costa-Gavras and note one sentence beginning νομίζω or πιστεύω. Then describe a scene from Z in three original Greek sentences: who asks, who answers, and what remains uncertain. Use the film's Greek historical context to look up έρευνα, δικαιοσύνη and εξουσία, without copying dialogue or treating fiction as evidence. Finally state the soundtrack language alongside the Greek title. This activity separates listening to a Greek-speaking filmmaker from describing his French-language film. The B 1 grade applies to the adapted Modern Greek passage; the interview may require slower playback, repetition and a transcript, especially when the discussion turns abstract.
