Life
Eleni Karaindrou, also written Eléni Karaïndrou, was born in the mountain village of Teichio in 1941. She studied piano and music theory at the Hellenic Conservatory in Athens and graduated from the University of Athens. In 1967 she went to Paris, where her studies included ethnomusicology and orchestration. The encounter with musical traditions became part of a career that joins close attention to individual instruments with a broad dramatic imagination.
After returning to Greece, she founded the Laboratory for Traditional Instruments at the ORA Cultural Centre. From 1975 to 1982 she worked with Greek Radio's Third Programme alongside Manos Hatzidakis. Film and theatre became lasting fields of composition. Her collaborators have included directors Christoforos Christofis, Tonia Marketaki, Margarethe von Trotta and Antonis Antypas, as well as Theo Angelopoulos, with whom she developed an extended artistic partnership.
Her international recording life includes Music for Films, released by ECM in 1991, and continuing collaboration with producer Manfred Eicher. Concert performances have brought her compositions into a different setting, with the composer herself at the piano and distinguished soloists beside her. The World Soundtrack Awards honoured her with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
Works

Karaindrou's themes often connect a recognisable melodic line with a particular instrumental colour. The viola of Kim Kashkashian is central to the album Το βλέμμα του Οδυσσέα (Ulysses' Gaze, 1995), while the credits also name oboe, accordion, cello, voice and strings. Following a theme as it returns in variations reveals how a small melodic idea can carry different weight without becoming a song with words.
Μια αιωνιότητα και μια μέρα (Eternity and a Day, 1998) brings clarinets and other traditional sounds into contact with an orchestral ensemble. The instruments respond to the atmosphere of Angelopoulos' cinema, yet the album allows the music to unfold independently of the images. Music for Films had already gathered recordings from different films into a listening sequence, including music associated with the saxophone of Jan Garbarek.
Concert in Athens, recorded at the Megaron in November 2010 and released in 2013, brings Kashkashian, Garbarek and oboist Vangelis Christopoulos together with Karaindrou. Its programme includes music for plays by Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee alongside film themes. The combination shows that her musical storytelling extends beyond cinema: a solo instrument can suggest a character, a pause or an unsettled memory.
Legacy in Greece today
Listen to a short official ECM sample from Ulysses' Gaze and consult its instrument credits. Choose one sound to describe with the Greek words η βιόλα, το όμποε or το ακορντεόν; check the instrument rather than guessing from a title. Write three original sentences with ήρεμος, αργός or πιο έντονος and explain which mood you hear. Instrumental listening gives you something to describe, while the Greek practice comes from your sentences and Karaindrou's interview words. Read her brief Greek quotation aloud and notice the stress in ποίηση and έμπνευση. The B1 reading supports this task; it does not turn wordless music into spoken Greek.

A line to remember
