Life
Tonia Marketaki was born in Piraeus in 1942. From 1960 to 1964 she studied in Paris at IDHEC and at the theatre school of the Théâtre National Populaire. Her film-school training included camera work, and she later worked as a journalist and film critic. These activities placed her within the generation associated with New Greek Cinema, alongside filmmakers rethinking how Greek stories could be filmed.
Her short Ο Γιάννης και ο δρόμος (John and the Road) appeared in 1967. During the military dictatorship she was imprisoned and spent a period outside Greece. Her first feature, Ιωάννης ο βίαιος (John the Violent, 1973), received direction and screenplay awards at Thessaloniki. Financing remained difficult: the project Ο άνθρωπος που χάθηκε (The Man Who Disappeared) was left unfinished.
Her work extended beyond feature production. She directed the television adaptation Λεμονοδάσος (The Lemon Grove, 1978), from Kosmas Politis, and worked in documentary and theatre. Η τιμή της αγάπης (The Price of Love), catalogued as 1984 and also dated 1983 in some sources, was her second completed feature. Κρυστάλλινες νύχτες (Crystal Nights) followed in 1992, with a screenplay co-written with Malvina Karali. Marketaki died in 1994. Her small completed feature filmography sits within a wider professional record of scripts, broadcasts, criticism and adaptations.
Works

Marketaki’s films place personal action inside social and historical pressures. John the Violent examines a crime and the construction of a public account around it. Questions of guilt, interpretation and institutional authority matter alongside the central figure. Its recognition for direction and screenplay in 1973 situated her work within the changing Greek cinema of that decade.
The Price of Love adapts Η τιμή και το χρήμα (Honour and Money), by Konstantinos Theotokis. In early-twentieth-century Corfu, Rini’s relationship with Andreas becomes entangled with a dowry and family finances. Her refusal to marry a man who puts money before her shapes the film’s ending. Marketaki’s screenplay brings a literary social conflict into performed encounters: words, pauses, gestures and the space between people all contribute. The music is by Eleni Karaindrou. The Greek word τιμή can suggest both price and honour, giving the title a useful linguistic resonance.
Crystal Nights connects occupied Athens, desire and persecution with a story that crosses two lives. The screenplay by Marketaki and Karali moves beyond straightforward realism. These films therefore offer different routes into Greek speech and storytelling, rather than a single uniform style. A supported short exchange is a useful learning unit; regional expressions and the historical setting of The Price of Love call for more help than the adapted Modern Greek reading itself.
Legacy in Greece today
Read the Cacoyannis Foundation’s Greek synopsis of Η τιμή της αγάπης and identify what Rini refuses. Then open ERT’s 1997 documentary Ο έρωτας των πρώτων πλάνων: Τώνια Μαρκετάκη, whose documentation identifies excerpts from that film. Choose one short dialogue exchange, with subtitles or language help, and note who speaks and who replies. Summarise a character’s choice in your own Greek with αρνείται… γιατί…; distinguish your explanation from the words actually spoken. The B1 reading supplies the useful nouns απόφαση and διάλογος. You can also find Marketaki’s name on the Thessaloniki festival venue list: her cinema hall is in Warehouse D at the port. This connects the language of an older film to a living place in Greek film culture.
