Life
Stavros Xarchakos was born in Athens in 1939. His early musical world included popular and rebetiko songs, European music heard on the radio and church music. He took cello and piano lessons. These different sounds became resources for a career moving between song, dramatic performance and orchestral writing.
Κόκκινα φανάρια (Red Lanterns), the 1963 film and record, brought his music together with lyrics by Lefteris Papadopoulos. Ένα μεσημέρι (One Noon, 1966) featured Nikos Gatsos’s words and singers including Vicky Moscholiou, Grigoris Bithikotsis and Stamatis Kokotas. In Μάρκος ο δάσκαλός μας (Markos Our Teacher, 1968), he reinterpreted songs by Markos Vamvakaris through his own arrangements.
He wrote the music for Iakovos Kambanellis’s Το μεγάλο μας τσίρκο (Our Big Circus), staged in 1973 with Jenny Karezi, Kostas Kazakos and Nikos Xylouris. Its recording appeared in 1974. For Costas Ferris’s Rebetiko in 1983, he created a score combining new songs, instrumental pieces and earlier songs. Gatsos and Ferris contributed new lyrics. Xarchakos’s work as a conductor and arranger has continued to give these compositions different performing lives. Yannis Tsarouchis’s artwork appears on the album cover.
Works

Xarchakos writes music that moves between a character’s situation and a wider audience’s memory. In cinema, an instrumental theme can hold a mood that a song turns into words. His work with lyricists and singers makes composition a collaborative art, shaped by the texture of a particular voice as well as by melody.
Rebetiko is a striking example. Much of its music was newly created for the 1983 film, yet it evokes an earlier rebetiko sound world. The soundtrack’s older pieces, original songs and instrumentals share a dramatic setting without having the same history. His Vamvakaris arrangements likewise approach an existing repertoire through a new performing perspective.
Our Big Circus placed song inside a theatrical journey through Greek history during the dictatorship. Collective performance helped turn the production into a meeting point for political feeling. Later concert versions of Rebetiko, including the Megaron presentation in 2024, brought singers, instrumentalists and chanters together under his direction. Instrumental passages offer rhythm and timbre; Greek words come through singers, titles and the descriptions listeners make themselves. The distinction makes his catalogue useful for both cultural listening and language practice.
Legacy in Greece today
Open the official Rebetiko track list and find Χασάπικο 22 (Hasapiko 22), marked instrumental, and Το πρακτορείο (The Agency), sung by Xarchakos with Gatsos’s lyrics. Listen to both and make two columns: φωνή and όργανα. Use the adapted passage to say Ακούω φωνή or Δεν ακούω φωνή, then write one Greek sentence for each recording. Check the performer credits and identify where the album lists a choir. The official Megaron page links a recording of The Agency. This exercise connects simple Greek listening descriptions with the difference between a composition, its words and its performers, with Greek practice coming from the sung recording, track titles and your own descriptions.
