Marinella

Μαρινέλλα

1938 – 2026 · Thessaloniki · Athens

Marinella (1938–2026) brought a theatrical presence to Greek popular song. Born in Thessaloniki as Kyriaki Papadopoulou, she moved from duets with Stelios Kazantzidis to a solo career spanning records, concerts and musical theatre. In 1974 she became Greece’s first Eurovision representative. Her performances offer learners a way into Greek song through clear words, expressive gestures and stories told on stage.

Life

Marinella was born in Thessaloniki in 1938 as Kyriaki Papadopoulou. Her early performing experience included theatre, and she began singing professionally in the 1950s. At the Panorama music venue in Thessaloniki she met Stelios Kazantzidis. They went on to work together in Athens, where her supporting vocal lines became part of their shared sound. In the middle of the 1960s she began building an independent career. This change required more than a new repertoire: she developed a stage identity in which singing, movement and presentation worked together.

On 6 April 1974 she represented Greece at its Eurovision debut in Brighton, finishing eleventh. Two years later she joined Kostas Hatzis for the live project Ρεσιτάλ (Recital), recorded at Skorpios in Athens’ Plaka district. The intimate venue offered a different setting from large nightclubs. Her work continued across different forms: in 2000 she appeared in the ERT television adaptation of Giannis Xanthoulis’s novel Ύστερα ήρθαν οι μέλισσες (Then Came the Bees). In 2015 she performed a musical setting of a poem by Yannis Ritsos at the Athens Festival. She died on 28 March 2026, aged eighty-seven, leaving recordings and filmed performances that document these changes.

Works

Marinella’s work belongs to the world of laiko, Greek popular song shaped by urban performance and the bouzouki, but her repertoire also reached musical theatre and poetry set to music. Her contribution was primarily that of an interpreter. Composers and lyricists supplied the songs; her voice, phrasing and stage gestures gave them a particular dramatic shape. Watching a performance helps explain this distinction: a raised hand or a pause can change how a familiar phrase reaches the audience.

Her Eurovision song, Κρασί, θάλασσα και τ’ αγόρι μου (Wine, Sea and My Boyfriend), had music by Giorgos Katsaros and lyrics by Pythagoras. Ρεσιτάλ brought her together with singer and composer Kostas Hatzis in 1976; its live recording preserves the exchange between performers and listeners. The 1983 album Για σένα τον άγνωστο (For You, the Stranger) featured music by Giorgos Hatzinasios and lyrics by Michalis Bourboulis. A later example of her range is Η σονάτα του σεληνόφωτος (The Moonlight Sonata), performed in 2015: Ritsos wrote the poetic monologue, Stavros Xarchakos composed the music and Giorgos Nanouris directed. Here her theatrical presence served a sustained literary voice rather than a sequence of separate songs.

Legacy in Greece today

Marinella’s legacy can be heard and seen. ERT’s archive preserves her 1982 interview for Παρασκήνιο (Behind the Scenes), while its Eurovision material records Greece’s first contest appearance. These documents let learners compare the speaking voice with the singing voice and notice how performance conventions changed.

Try a short activity: watch the 1974 performance once for the music, then again for the gestures. Write down three Greek words you recognise, and check their meaning. Next, listen to part of Ρεσιτάλ and notice the audience’s response. The contrast between a televised competition and a small live venue makes her ability to address different audiences concrete, without requiring you to understand every lyric.

Εγώ υπάρχω. Γιατί θέλω να υπάρχω.
