Life
Alkistis Protopsalti was born in Alexandria to Greek parents and moved to Greece as a child. Her autobiographical account connects the Egyptian city’s sounds and seafront with her early memories, then follows her school years in Athens. Before pursuing music, she was active in athletics. An audition for Dimos Moutsis redirected her towards professional singing and led to her first recording work.
In 1975 she participated in Moutsis’s Τετραλογία (Tetralogy), an album setting Greek poetry. This was a shared recording with other singers, rather than her first solo album. Later work brought her together with composers including Ilias Andriopoulos, Stamatis Kraounakis, Nikos Antypas and Stefanos Korkolis, and with lyricist Lina Nikolakopoulou. These changing partnerships shaped a career across different musical settings.
Concerts abroad connected her work with Greek communities and wider audiences. Her repertoire also includes songs in other languages, so an international performance should not automatically be treated as Greek-language material. Projects with Korkolis, orchestras and the MandolinARTE ensemble expanded her stage formats. In a June 2026 interview she discussed another collaboration, with Nikos Portokaloglou, and described artistic encounters as a continuing source of energy.
Works

Her records make the roles of singer, composer and lyricist visible. Κυκλοφορώ κι οπλοφορώ (I Go Around Armed, 1985) has music by Stamatis Kraounakis and lyrics including work by Lina Nikolakopoulou. Παραδέχτηκα (I Admitted It, 1991) includes music by Goran Bregović and Aristeidis Moschos. Σαν ηφαίστειο που ξυπνά (Like an Awakening Volcano, 1997) joins Nikos Antypas’s music with Nikolakopoulou’s words.
Στο ωραιότερο σημείο (At the Most Beautiful Point, 2007) includes Πάμε Χαβάη (Let’s Go to Hawaii), a Greek adaptation of It’s a Pity. The Greek lyrics are credited to Elena Milioka, while the composition has international credits. A song can therefore enter Greek everyday listening through adaptation; its performer need not be its original songwriter. The Greek version, rather than an English-language original, supplies this page’s listening activity.
Other projects return to poetry and acoustic detail. Με τα φτερά της ποίησης (On the Wings of Poetry, 2021), with Korkolis at the piano, preserves a live recording from the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus. In the 2016 collaboration with MandolinARTE, familiar repertoire was rearranged for plucked strings. These formats reveal how accompaniment changes the space around the same singing voice.
Legacy in Greece today
Protopsalti’s official discography provides album credits and listening links, helping learners distinguish Greek songs from multilingual performances and identify the writers behind a familiar recording.
Follow the artist’s listening link for Πάμε Χαβάη and recognise πάμε, “let’s go”. Then make a real invitation: Πάμε μια βόλτα; “Shall we go for a walk?” Or change the destination: Πάμε στο πάρκο; “Shall we go to the park?” Say the question naturally rather than copying the sung rhythm. The adapted reading provides these models and words for near and far. This A2 task uses a short, recognisable expression; the whole song’s fast delivery and wordplay require more support.
