Tamta

Τάμτα

1981 · Georgia · Athens

Tamta (born 1981) is a Georgian-born singer who built her career in Greek pop. After her breakthrough on Greek television, she released Greek recordings, developed a distinctive visual stage language and represented Cyprus at Eurovision in 2019 with Replay. Her catalogue moves between Greek, English and Georgian, making it a useful place to practise hearing which language a song actually uses.

Life

Tamta Goduadze was born in Georgia in 1981 and grew up there before moving to Greece as an adult. In 2004 she finished second on the Greek television talent show Super Idol. The programme introduced her voice to a new audience and led into a recording career. Her story belongs to the musical life of Greece through work, language and collaboration, while her Georgian background remains part of the way she presents herself as an artist.

Her self-titled album appeared in 2006. Θάρρος ή αλήθεια (Dare or Truth) followed in 2010 and included a duet with Sakis Rouvas. Television later placed her on the other side of the judging table, with X Factor roles in Greece and Georgia. In 2019 she represented Cyprus at Eurovision in Tel Aviv with Replay, finishing thirteenth in the final. That English-language performance was one part of a multilingual career. The 2023 album Identity Crisis marked another turn towards electronic textures and a different visual identity. In a 2024 interview she described the importance of working as a team, making clear that her changing sound involves collaborators as well as the singer at the microphone.

Works

Tamta treats a pop performance as a meeting of voice, movement, clothes and electronic sound. The same singer can appear in a television duet, a Eurovision production or a club setting, and each gives the voice a different frame. Her record label describes a repertoire mixing Greek, English and Georgian. This makes listening to the actual words essential: an English title does not always mean an entirely English recording, while Replay, her Eurovision entry, is in English.

The Greek title Θάρρος ή αλήθεια (Dare or Truth) offers a particularly useful small lesson. The accented ή means “or”; it places two choices side by side. Say the title, then try a choice of your own, such as καφές ή τσάι, “coffee or tea”. Identity Crisis brings another listening environment, with electronic production and a changing visual presentation. Rather than assuming every release sounds like her early pop recordings, compare the texture around the voice, the pace and the way words are repeated. In her account of teamwork, writers, producers and other collaborators contribute to this process. A recognisable performer can therefore develop through several musical languages while still giving Greek learners concrete words to hear and use.

Legacy in Greece today

Tamta’s repertoire lets you practise choosing Greek listening material rather than relying on a familiar artist name. Open an official recording of Θάρρος ή αλήθεια and identify the two title nouns when they return. Then write three choices with ή: καφές ή τσάι, σπίτι ή σχολείο, δίσκος ή συναυλία. Read them aloud as questions. Compare a short part of that Greek recording with Replay and name the language of each. Finally read the Greek passage here and say where Tamta was born, where she works and which country she represented. Georgia, Greece and Cyprus describe different parts of the same musical route, while her Greek songs provide the words for your own conversation.
