Kaiti Garbi

Καίτη Γαρμπή

1961 · Korydallos · Athens

Kaiti Garbi (born 1961), also written Katy Garbi, is a Greek singer whose repertoire moves between pop and laïko. Her first solo album was Πρόβα (Rehearsal) in 1989. She represented Greece at Eurovision in 1993 with the Greek-language Ελλάδα, χώρα του φωτός (Greece, Country of Light), finishing ninth. Her later recordings and interviews give learners everyday Greek through titles, feelings and the language of expressing a preference.

Life

Kaiti Garbi was born in Korydallos, in the Athens area, in 1961. Before her solo recording career she worked on stage and as a backing singer, learning performance through regular appearances. Her solo debut album Πρόβα (Rehearsal) arrived in 1989. The Greek word πρόβα names the practice session before a concert or play, an everyday term that opens a small route into her catalogue. Through recordings and live work, she developed a place in Greek popular music where contemporary pop production meets the vocal and emotional language of laïko.

In 1993 she represented Greece at Eurovision in Millstreet, Ireland. Ελλάδα, χώρα του φωτός (Greece, Country of Light) was sung in Greek and finished ninth with 64 points. Her recording career continued beyond that single appearance. The 1997 album Ευαισθησίες (Sensitivities) formed part of a long collaboration with songwriter Phoebus. She later explored different arrangements and languages, including the Italian-language Buona Vita in 2013. Her Greek repertoire remained central to new releases and concerts. In 2023 Ασφαλώς και μπορώ (Of Course I Can) accompanied the Και φωτιά και νερό (Both Fire and Water) tour. Her public interviews also allow listeners to hear the speaking voice behind the recorded songs.

Works

Garbi’s recordings bring together a pop arrangement and a laïko approach to a song’s emotional statement. The singer is the interpreter, while composers, lyricists, arrangers and instrumentalists shape the finished recording with her. On Ευαισθησίες (Sensitivities), the connection with Phoebus is especially visible: the songwriter’s material became closely associated with her voice. The title itself names a feeling, and other Greek titles in her catalogue can give learners an ordinary noun before they attempt to follow a whole song. A performance may combine a memorable melodic phrase with words about a relationship, an absence or a decision.

Her repertoire also changes format over time. The 1993 Eurovision entry is a Greek-language performance on an international broadcast; Buona Vita is an Italian-language recording project. The language of the material matters when choosing a listening exercise. In 2024 she revisited Ευαισθησίες in a duet with Anastasios Rammos, with production by Arcade. Ασφαλώς και μπορώ, released in 2023, has music by Nikos Terzis and lyrics by Giannis Kotsiras. Its short title contains the everyday verb μπορώ, I can, making a practical starting point for a learner’s own sentence. Greek interviews add spontaneous questions and explanations to the more patterned language of recorded song. Together, the recordings and speaking voice reveal different ways that contemporary Greek reaches an audience.

Legacy in Greece today

Start with the titles Πρόβα and Ελλάδα, χώρα του φωτός on her official biography and Eurovision recording. Match η πρόβα with οι πρόβες, then notice το φως becoming του φωτός. These are ordinary words in a rehearsal room or a description of a bright place. Read Ασφαλώς και μπορώ aloud and make a new sentence with μπορώ να: Μπορώ να μιλήσω ελληνικά. Next listen to a short part of her Greek MEGA interview of 24 April 2023 and find the question Μπορείς να αρέσεις σε όλους; Give your own musical preference with Μου αρέσει αυτό το τραγούδι. This small activity moves from real repertoire titles to a reusable way to express ability and taste.
