Life
Maria Sakkari was born in Athens on 25 July 1995. Her professional career developed through the international tennis circuit, where players move between countries, surfaces and tournament levels. The WTA record places her breakthrough into the Top 100 in 2016. In 2018 she reached her first tour singles final at San Jose. The following year she won her first WTA singles title at Rabat, an important step from promising performances to a completed tournament victory. These results belong to a gradual career, rather than a single sudden arrival.
In 2021 Sakkari reached the semifinals at both Roland Garros and the US Open. She entered the Top 10 that September and qualified for the WTA Finals. On 21 March 2022 she first reached her career-high ranking of No. 3. A ranking describes a position at a particular time, so that historical high should be read with its date. She won her first WTA 1000 title at Guadalajara in September 2023, defeating Caroline Dolehide in the final. Her later public interviews describe the continuing work of the tour: preparing for another opponent, handling a result and concentrating on the present. In a Greek interview in August 2026 she spoke about enjoying the experience of playing in Athens.
Works

Sakkari’s work takes place in the repeated decisions of a tennis match: serving, returning, moving and choosing when to attack. The WTA lists her as right-handed with a two-handed backhand. Her tournament record includes different surfaces and different demands, from the clay of Roland Garros to the hard courts of the US Open and Guadalajara. The two Grand Slam semifinals in 2021 show the breadth of that season; they are semifinal results, not championship titles. Her historical ranking and her tournament trophies describe different parts of a career.
The 2023 Guadalajara final supplies a precise example to read. Sakkari defeated Caroline Dolehide 7–5, 6–3 on 23 September, winning in two sets. The tournament’s official results preserve each set, while the WTA report places it after her first title at Rabat in 2019 and six subsequent final defeats. This context makes a result more understandable than a list of victories alone. Her Greek interviews add another register: she speaks about the next opponent, pressure, concentration and enjoyment. In August 2026 she described playing before the Athens audience and said that she had loved tennis even more. Reading the report in Greek lets a learner meet sports words in a real setting, then use the same verbs to describe an ordinary game with a friend.
Legacy in Greece today
Open the Guadalajara Open’s official 2023 results and find the final between Sakkari and Dolehide. Read the score aloud in Greek: επτά πέντε, έξι τρία. Then say Κέρδισε με δύο σετ μηδέν and add the year: Το 2023 κέρδισε στη Γουαδαλαχάρα. In her Greek SDNA interview of 31 August 2026, find γήπεδο and πρώτο γύρο. Notice how a player talks about the next match as well as past results. Make a simple sentence of your own: Θέλω να παίξω καλά. With a friend, point to a racket and a court and name them η ρακέτα and το γήπεδο. This gives the sport a practical Greek vocabulary beyond names on a scoreboard.
