Eleni Foureira

Ελένη Φουρέιρα

1987 · Albania · Athens

Eleni Foureira (born 1987) is an Albanian-born Greek singer whose performances combine singing and dance. After beginning with the group Mystique, she developed a solo career in Greek pop. In 2018 she represented Cyprus at Eurovision with Fuego and finished second. Beyond that English-language song, her Greek recordings offer learners short titles, everyday words and a lively introduction to contemporary listening.

Life

Eleni Foureira was born in Albania in 1987 and grew up in Greece after moving there as a child. Her professional life developed in Athens, and she is a Greek singer of Albanian origin. Keeping those facts separate also makes her Eurovision story easier to understand: the country a performer represents is not necessarily her birthplace or the country where she built a career. Her public account of arriving in Greece includes the experience of learning a new language, a connection that Greek learners can recognise without assuming their lives are the same.

Her recording career began with the girl group Mystique in 2007. A self-titled solo album followed in 2010. Later releases included Βασίλισσα (Queen) in 2017, before Fuego took her to the Eurovision stage in Lisbon in 2018 as the representative of Cyprus. She finished second in the final. The appearance introduced her combination of singing and choreography to a wider audience. She returned to Eurovision as a guest in 2019 and 2024. Meanwhile, her Greek recording work continued, including Αεράκι (Little Breeze) in 2021 and the album Poli_Ploki in 2022. The international television moment is therefore one chapter within an ongoing Greek pop career.

Works

Foureira’s performances make choreography part of a song’s meaning. A beat is not only something to hear: it also organises steps, gestures and the relationship between a singer and the dancers around her. Fuego is a clear introduction to this approach, but its English lyrics and Spanish title do not make it a Greek lesson. It is useful instead for noticing how an international television performance communicates through movement, repeated sounds and a strongly shaped chorus. The performer interprets a song created with a team; stage presence and songwriting credits are different parts of that process.

Her Greek recordings offer a more direct route into the language. The album title Βασίλισσα means “queen”; Αεράκι is “a little breeze”, a familiar example of the diminutive ending -άκι. In the 2022 album Poli_Ploki, pop shares space with trap, regional musical colours and Greek popular-song elements. Its track Μόνο Εσύ Κι Εγώ (Only You and Me), performed with Konstantinos Argyros, puts two common personal pronouns in the title. These small details give learners concrete listening goals. Listen for a known word returning rather than translating everything at once, and distinguish the sung vowel from the surrounding instruments. The same recording can support both dancing and patient attention to Greek sounds.

Legacy in Greece today

Foureira makes contemporary Greek pop a practical listening resource. Begin with the official label recording of Μόνο Εσύ Κι Εγώ: identify εσύ and εγώ when they return, then say the title aloud with the stress on the final syllables of those pronouns. Next read Αεράκι beside αέρας and notice how the word changes; you do not need to reproduce the lyrics. After listening, write two short sentences about music you like using τραγούδι and ακούω. Her career also gives learners a useful geographical distinction: born in Albania, professionally established in Greece, Eurovision representative for Cyprus. Fuego supplies the international reference, while the Greek recordings supply the language practice.

Did you know?

  • She represented Cyprus at Eurovision, although she was born in Albania and built her career in Greece.
  • Fuego has a Spanish title meaning “fire”, but the Eurovision song is in English.
  • Αεράκι shows the Greek diminutive ending -άκι, also useful beyond song titles.
