From two-word utterances to real sentences: the connectors that make your Greek flow.

και — and κι before a vowel
και adds anything to anything: words (ψωμί και τυρί), sentences (Ήρθε και κάθισε). Before a vowel it usually becomes κι: κι εγώ, κι αυτός. Doubled, it stresses: Και ο Νίκος και η Μαρία ήρθαν (BOTH Nikos and Maria).
- Πήρα ψωμί και τυρί.I got bread and cheese.
- Κι εγώ θέλω να έρθω!I want to come too!
- Και ο Νίκος και η Μαρία ήρθαν.Both Nikos and Maria came.
αλλά, όμως, ή, ούτε
Contrast: αλλά at the head of its clause, όμως more mobile — Θέλω να έρθω, αλλά δεν μπορώ. / Δεν μπορώ όμως. Choice: ή (ή… ή… = either… or…): Τσάι ή καφέ; Double negative: ούτε… ούτε… — Δεν πίνω ούτε τσάι ούτε καφέ.
- Θέλω να έρθω, αλλά δεν μπορώ.I want to come, but I can’t.
- Είναι κρύο σήμερα· θα βγούμε όμως.It’s cold today; we’ll go out anyway.
- Τσάι ή καφέ;Tea or coffee?
- Δεν πίνω ούτε τσάι ούτε καφέ.I drink neither tea nor coffee.
First subordinators: γιατί, όταν, αν
γιατί gives the reason: Μένω σπίτι γιατί βρέχει. όταν sets the time: Όταν έχω χρόνο, διαβάζω. αν sets the condition: Αν θες, πάμε. Note: γιατί is also the word “why?” — Γιατί κλαις; — Γιατί χτύπησα.
- Μένω σπίτι γιατί βρέχει.I’m staying home because it’s raining.
- Όταν έχω χρόνο, διαβάζω.When I have time, I read.

When does «και» become «κι» in Greek?
Before a vowel, usually: «κι εγώ», «κι αυτός» — «Κι εγώ θέλω να έρθω!» (I want to come too!). Doubled, «και» emphasises: «Και ο Νίκος και η Μαρία ήρθαν» (BOTH Nikos and Maria came).
What is the difference between «αλλά» and «όμως» in Greek?
Both mark contrast, but «αλλά» opens its clause while «όμως» can move around: «Θέλω να έρθω, αλλά δεν μπορώ» (I want to come, but I can’t) and «Είναι κρύο σήμερα· θα βγούμε όμως» (it is cold today; we will go out anyway).
How do you express cause, time and condition in Greek?
«γιατί» gives the reason, «όταν» the time, «αν» the condition: «Μένω σπίτι γιατί βρέχει» (I am staying home because it is raining), «Όταν έχω χρόνο, διαβάζω», «Αν θέλεις, πάμε σινεμά». Note that «γιατί» is also the word for “why?”.
