The imperfect in both voices: έγραφα / γραφόμουν

The scenery of the past, active side and passive side — plus the -όμουν endings nobody forgets once seen.

The imperfect in both voices: έγραφα / γραφόμουν

Active recap, more precisely

Present stem + -α, -ες, -ε, -αμε, -ατε, -αν: έγραφα, έγραφες… The augment έ- appears only when the accent needs it (έγραφα but διαβάζαμε). Verbs in -άω/-ώ take -ούσα: μιλούσα, αγαπούσα, μπορούσα.

  • Έγραφα γράμματα κάθε βδομάδα.I used to write letters every week.
We used to read until late at night.
She was on the phone when the doorbell rang.

A whole separate set, grafted onto the present stem: γραφόμουν, γραφόσουν, γραφόταν, γραφόμασταν, γραφόσασταν, γράφονταν. Deponents follow it: ερχόμουν, καθόμουν, θυμόμουν, σκεφτόμουν — the most frequent forms of the entire set.

  • Ερχόμουν κάθε μέρα με τα πόδια.I used to walk here every day.
We used to sit in the same café.
  • Σκεφτόμουν να σου τηλεφωνήσω.I was thinking of calling you.
The names were written down on a list.

Three uses that keep coming back

3) Politeness: Ήθελα να σας ρωτήσω κάτι — the imperfect softens a request, exactly as a conditional does elsewhere.

It was raining and the street was empty.
Every summer we went to the village.
  • Ήθελα να σας ρωτήσω κάτι.I wanted to ask you something.

How do you form the passive imperfect in Greek?

With a separate set of endings grafted onto the present stem: «γραφόμουν», «γραφόσουν», «γραφόταν», «γραφόμασταν», «γραφόσασταν», «γράφονταν». Deponents follow the same pattern: «ερχόμουν», «καθόμουν», «θυμόμουν», «σκεφτόμουν» — the most frequent forms of the whole set.

When do you use the imperfect in Greek?

Three uses keep coming back: scenery («Έβρεχε και ο δρόμος ήταν άδειος» — it was raining and the street was empty), habit («Κάθε καλοκαίρι πηγαίναμε στο χωριό» — every summer we went to the village) and politeness («Ήθελα να σας ρωτήσω κάτι» — I wanted to ask you something), where the imperfect softens a request.

Why is the imperfect of «μιλάω» formed as «μιλούσα»?

Because verbs in -άω / -ώ take -ούσα: «μιλούσα», «αγαπούσα», «μπορούσα». Ordinary verbs simply add -α, -ες, -ε, -αμε, -ατε, -αν to the present stem, and the augment έ- appears only when the accent needs it: «έγραφα» but «διαβάζαμε».
