Nominalisation: το ότι, το να
A whole clause becomes subject or object: Το ότι ήρθες σημαίνει πολλά. The decisive tool of Γ2 prose.

το ότι — the fact that
The neuter article turns the clause into a noun phrase, usable anywhere: Το ότι άργησες δεν με πειράζει (subject), Δεν φταις εσύ για το ότι χάσαμε (after a preposition). More explicit variant: το γεγονός ότι.
- Άργησες, αλλά δεν πειράζει. → Το ότι άργησες δεν με πειράζει.You’re late, but never mind. → The fact that you’re late doesn’t bother me.
- Χάσαμε, αλλά δεν φταις εσύ. → Δεν φταις εσύ για το ότι χάσαμε.We lost, but it isn’t your fault. → You are not to blame for the fact that we lost.
- Ήρθες. → Το γεγονός ότι ήρθες σημαίνει πολλά για μένα.You came. → The fact that you came means a lot to me.
το να — the doing of
Where English uses a gerund: Το να διαβάζεις καθημερινά είναι η μισή δουλειά (reading daily is half the job), Απόλαυσα το να μη βιάζομαι (I enjoyed not hurrying). Nuance: το ότι states a fact, το να targets the activity itself.
- Διαβάζεις καθημερινά. → Το να διαβάζεις καθημερινά είναι η μισή δουλειά.You read every day. → Reading every day is half the job.
- Δεν βιάζομαι το πρωί. → Απόλαυσα το να μη βιάζομαι το πρωί.I don’t rush in the morning. → I enjoyed not having to rush in the morning.
- Το ότι ταξιδεύει συνέχεια το ξέρουν όλοι· το να ταξιδεύεις συνέχεια όμως κουράζει.Everyone knows that he travels constantly; but travelling constantly is tiring.
Climbing into abstraction
Scholarly prose replaces the nominalisation with the abstract noun: Το ότι αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές → Η αύξηση των τιμών. Three levels of the same content: Επειδή αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές… (spoken) → Το ότι αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές… → Λόγω της αύξησης των τιμών… (dense written). Γ2 moves freely between all three.
- Επειδή αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές, μειώθηκε η κατανάλωση.Because prices went up, consumption fell.
- Το ότι αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές μείωσε την κατανάλωση.The fact that prices went up reduced consumption.
- Λόγω της αύξησης των τιμών, μειώθηκε η κατανάλωση.Owing to the rise in prices, consumption fell.

What is the difference between «το ότι» and «το να»?
«Το ότι» states a fact: «Το ότι άργησες δεν με πειράζει» (the fact that you were late doesn’t bother me). «Το να» targets the activity itself: «Το να διαβάζεις καθημερινά είναι η μισή δουλειά» (reading every day is half the work).
How do I turn a whole clause into the subject of a sentence?
By putting the neuter article in front: «Άργησες» → «Το ότι άργησες δεν με πειράζει». The resulting noun phrase can go anywhere, even after a preposition: «Δεν φταις εσύ για το ότι χάσαμε».
How does formal written Greek avoid «το ότι»?
It replaces the nominalisation with an abstract noun: «Το ότι αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές» → «Η αύξηση των τιμών». Three levels of the same content: «Επειδή αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές…» (spoken) → «Το ότι αυξήθηκαν…» → «Λόγω της αύξησης των τιμών…» (dense writing).
