The prepositions of written prose
λόγω, μέσω, βάσει, κατόπιν, εξαιτίας: the genitive-taking prepositions that make up the language of newspapers and offices.
The + genitive set
Each one replaces a colloquial periphrasis — that is their whole point: λόγω βροχής = επειδή βρέχει, in one word.
- Η συνάντηση αναβλήθηκε λόγω καιρού.The meeting was postponed because of the weather.
- Η αίτηση υποβάλλεται αποκλειστικά μέσω διαδικτύου.The application is submitted exclusively online.
- Η απόφαση ελήφθη βάσει του νέου κανονισμού.The decision was taken on the basis of the new regulation.
- Επισκέψεις μόνο κατόπιν συνεννόησης.Visits by prior arrangement only.

Useful nuances
λόγω is neutral, εξαιτίας points a finger (an unwelcome cause). μέσω is everywhere in digital life: μέσω email, μέσω εφαρμογής. κατόπιν lives in set phrases: κατόπιν εορτής (too late, after the fact!).
- Το μάθημα ματαιώθηκε λόγω απεργίας.The class was cancelled owing to a strike.
- Εξαιτίας της αμέλειάς του χάθηκε ολόκληρη η προθεσμία.Because of his carelessness the whole deadline was lost.
- Θα σας ενημερώσουμε μέσω ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου.We will inform you by email.
- Ήρθαν να βοηθήσουν, αλλά κατόπιν εορτής.They came to help, but after the event.
προς + accusative: formal direction
προς = towards (direction, addressee, ratio): προς τον Βορρά, επιστολή προς τον δήμαρχο, ένα προς ένα (one to one). Also in βήμα προς βήμα (step by step) and λέξη προς λέξη (word for word).
- Το πλοίο κατευθύνεται προς τον Βορρά.The ship is heading north.
- Απέστειλε επιστολή προς τον δήμαρχο.He sent a letter to the mayor.

What does λόγω mean and how is it built?
«Λόγω» + genitive means “because of” and replaces a whole clause: «λόγω βροχής» says «επειδή βρέχει» in one word. Example: «Η συνάντηση αναβλήθηκε λόγω καιρού» (the meeting was postponed because of the weather).
What is the nuance between λόγω and εξαιτίας?
