The imperfect: παρατατικός
The past of habits and backgrounds: κάθε μέρα έγραφα — every day I used to write. The aorist’s twin, with the opposite viewpoint.
Aorist or imperfect?
Ask yourself: photo or film? A single, completed action → aorist (Χθες έγραψα ένα γράμμα). A habit, a duration, a backdrop → imperfect (Κάθε μέρα έγραφα γράμματα · Έγραφα όταν χτύπησε το τηλέφωνο).
- Χθες έγραψα ένα γράμμα.Yesterday I wrote a letter.
- Έγραφα όταν χτύπησε το τηλέφωνο.I was writing when the phone rang.
- Κάθε μέρα έγραφα στο ημερολόγιό μου.Every day I used to write in my diary.
Formation: present stem + past endings
Same endings and same augment as the aorist — but on the present stem, without the σ: έγραψα (aorist) / έγραφα (imperfect). The only difference between the two pasts is the stem.
- Μιλούσαμε στο τηλέφωνο μία ώρα.We were talking on the phone for an hour.
- Ήμουν πολύ κουρασμένος χθες.I was very tired yesterday.
- Δεν είχα χρόνο εκείνη την εβδομάδα.I didn’t have time that week.

The signals in the sentence
Calling for the imperfect: κάθε μέρα, πάντα, συνήθως, συχνά, όταν ήμουν μικρός (when I was little). Calling for the aorist: χθες, ξαφνικά, μια φορά, το 2010. In a story the imperfect sets the scene and the aorist moves the plot.
- Όταν ήμουν μικρός, μέναμε στη Θεσσαλονίκη.When I was little, we lived in Thessaloniki.
