Nominal (complement) clauses

Ειδικές, βουλητικές, ενδοιαστικές, πλάγιες ερωτηματικές: four types that stand where a noun would. The main verb decides which one — it is not a free choice.

Nominal (complement) clauses

The main verb commands

Λέω, ξέρω, νομίζω, βλέπω → ειδική (ότι / πως). Θέλω, ζητώ, προτείνω, πρέπει → βουλητική (να). Φοβάμαι, ανησυχώ → ενδοιαστική (μήπως). Ρωτώ, αναρωτιέμαι, δεν ξέρω → indirect question (αν, τι, πού…). Choosing «να» after λέω changes the meaning: «του είπα να φύγει» is an order, «του είπα ότι έφυγε» is information.

  • Ξέρω ότι ήρθε χθες το βράδυ.I know that he arrived last night.
  • Σου ζητώ να το ξανασκεφτείς.I’m asking you to think it over again.
  • Φοβάμαι μήπως αργήσουμε στη συνάντηση.I’m afraid we might be late for the meeting.
  • Αναρωτιέμαι αν θα προλάβουμε.I wonder whether we’ll make it in time.

Formal traps

Three recurring errors. First ότι (that) versus ό,τι (whatever). Then the indirect question: it loses its question mark and its inversion — «Ρώτησε πού μένω», never «Ρώτησε πού μένω;». Finally the ενδοιαστική: after φοβάμαι, μήπως introduces what is feared, whereas ότι would introduce an established fact.

How do I choose between ότι, να and μήπως?

It is not a free choice: the main verb commands. «Λέω, ξέρω, νομίζω» take «ότι» («Ξέρω ότι ήρθε», I know he came), «θέλω, ζητώ, πρέπει» take «να» («Σου ζητώ να το ξανασκεφτείς»), and «φοβάμαι, ανησυχώ» take «μήπως» («Φοβάμαι μήπως αργήσουμε»).

«Του είπα ότι έφυγε» versus «του είπα να φύγει»: what changes?

The mood changes the speech act: with «ότι» you report a fact (“I told him that he had left”), with «να» you give an order (“I told him to leave”). The same verb «λέω» does both.

How is an indirect question punctuated in Greek?

With no question mark and no inversion: write «Ρώτησε πού μένω» (he asked where I live), never «Ρώτησε πού μένω;». It is one of three recurring errors, along with confusing «ότι / ό,τι» and using «ότι» after «φοβάμαι» instead of «μήπως».
