Two ways to say “to someone”

Full form: σε + accusative — Δίνω το βιβλίο στον Νίκο. Short form: the genitive pronoun BEFORE the verb — Του δίνω το βιβλίο. They combine for emphasis: Του το δίνω αύριο, του Νίκου.

  • Δίνω το βιβλίο στον Νίκο.I’m giving the book to Nikos.
  • Του δίνω το βιβλίο.I’m giving him the book.
  • Του Νίκου του δίνω το βιβλίο.It’s Nikos I’m giving the book to.

μου το…: the order of the two pronouns

Always genitive THEN accusative, both before the verb: Μου το έδωσε. Σου τα στέλνω. Της την έφερα. In the imperative they go AFTER: Δώσε μου το! Φέρε της την! Star verbs: δίνω, λέω, στέλνω, δείχνω, φέρνω, αγοράζω, μαγειρεύω, διαβάζω (μου διαβάζει παραμύθια).

  • Μου το έδωσε χθες.He gave it to me yesterday.
  • Της την έφερα το πρωί.I brought it to her this morning.
  • Δώσε μου το, σε παρακαλώ!Give it to me, please!

σε ρωτάω κάτι: the double accusative

Three verbs prefer TWO accusatives: ρωτάω (Σε ρωτάω κάτι), διδάσκω (Μας διδάσκει ελληνικά), κερνάω (Θα σε κεράσω έναν καφέ). And watch the genitive-only verbs: μου αρέσει, μου μοιάζει, μου πάει (Σου πάει το κόκκινο! — red suits you).

  • Σε ρωτάω κάτι.I’m asking you something.
  • Μας διδάσκει ελληνικά.He teaches us Greek.
  • Θα σε κεράσω έναν καφέ.I’ll buy you a coffee.
  • Σου πάει πολύ το πράσινο!Green really suits you!
