Demonstratives: αυτός, εκείνος
This and that — and trap #1: “this book” is αυτό ΤΟ βιβλίο, the article is compulsory.
αυτός here, εκείνος over there
αυτός points to what is near, εκείνος to what is far (in space, time or mind): Αυτός είναι ο αδερφός μου. Εκείνη η μέρα ήταν δύσκολη. Both decline exactly like -ος/-η/-ο adjectives.
- Αυτός είναι ο αδερφός μου.This is my brother.
- Εκείνη η μέρα ήταν δύσκολη.That day was hard.
- Αυτό το βιβλίο είναι δικό μου, εκείνο είναι δικό σου.This book is mine, that one is yours.

The trap: αυτό ΤΟ βιβλίο
Before a noun, the demonstrative demands the definite article: αυτό το βιβλίο (this book), εκείνη η γυναίκα (that woman), αυτοί οι φίλοι μου. Without the article (αυτό βιβλίο) the phrase is wrong — the single most common learner error here.
- Αυτό το τραγούδι μου αρέσει πολύ.I really like this song.
- Εκείνο το καλοκαίρι δεν το ξεχνάω.That summer I’ll never forget.
τέτοιος, τόσος — and the questions ποιος, πόσος
τέτοιος = “such (a)”: Δεν λέμε τέτοια πράγματα! τόσος = “so big / so much”: Μην τρως τόσο ψωμί! Their question twins agree too: Ποιος ήρθε; Ποια μπλούζα θέλεις; Πόσο κάνει; Πόσες μέρες μένεις;
- Δεν λέμε τέτοια πράγματα!We don’t say such things!
- Μην τρως τόσο ψωμί!Don’t eat so much bread!

Why is it «αυτό το βιβλίο» and not «αυτό βιβλίο»?
Because before a noun the demonstrative REQUIRES the definite article: «αυτό το βιβλίο» (this book), «εκείνη η γυναίκα» (that woman). Without the article the phrase is simply wrong — this is the most common learner mistake here.
