Nouns of ancient declension
Το ύδωρ, το γάλα, το τέρας: nouns whose stem shifts in the genitive, surviving mostly in compounds and set phrases.

The hidden stem
The genitive reveals a stem you cannot guess from the nominative — and it is that stem which builds the learned and scientific compounds.
- Η ποιότητα του πόσιμου ύδατος ελέγχεται τακτικά.The quality of the drinking water is checked regularly.
- Αποφεύγει τα προϊόντα γάλακτος.She avoids dairy products.
- Πάσχει από χρόνια νόσο του ήπατος.He suffers from a chronic liver disease.

Where you still meet them
The simple word is often replaced (το νερό for το ύδωρ), but the ancient stem is everywhere: υδραυλικός, ύδρευση, αφυδάτωση. Recognising the stem lets you guess hundreds of learned words without a dictionary.

Why does «το ύδωρ» become «του ύδατος» in the genitive?
These are nouns of ancient declension whose stem shows up only in the genitive: «το ύδωρ» → «του ύδατος», «το γάλα» → «του γάλακτος», «το ήπαρ» → «του ήπατος». That hidden stem is what builds the learned compounds.
Do Greeks still say «ύδωρ» in everyday life?
Rarely: everyday Greek says «το νερό». But the ancient stem is everywhere in derived words — «ύδρευση» (water supply), «υδραυλικός» (plumber), «αφυδάτωση» (dehydration).
How does knowing these stems help with vocabulary?
Recognising the hidden stem lets you decode hundreds of learned words without a dictionary: from «γάλακτος» come «γαλακτοκομικά» (dairy products), from «ήπατος» comes «ηπατίτιδα» (hepatitis).
