Από and σε: from and to

The two prepositions that carry your whole day: Είμαι από τη Γενεύη, πάω στο σχολείο — and the famous στο = σε + το.

σε + article = στον, στην, στο

σε covers both place AND direction: being at, going to. With the article it fuses: σε + τον = στον, σε + την = στην, σε + το = στο. After σε the noun is in the accusative.

από: the origin

από says where you are from: Είμαι από την Ελβετία. Also the starting point of a route or schedule: από το σπίτι μέχρι το σχολείο, από τις εννιά.

  • Είμαι από την Ελβετία.I’m from Switzerland.
The train comes from Berlin.
  • Δουλεύω από τις εννιά μέχρι τις πέντε.I work from nine to five.

στον or στο? Gender decides

The choice follows the noun's gender: ο κήπος → στον κήπο, η παραλία → στην παραλία, το νησί → στο νησί. Reminder: in the accusative the masculine drops its -ς (τον κήπο) — the same form appears after στον.

The children are playing in the garden.
  • Πάμε στην παραλία;Shall we go to the beach?
In the summer we stay on the island.

With, for, without: με, για, χωρίς

Three more prepositions, same rule — always the accusative: Καφές με γάλα. And to give TO someone, σε again: Δίνω το βιβλίο στον Νίκο.

  • Έναν καφέ με γάλα, παρακαλώ.A coffee with milk, please.
  • Αγόρασα ένα δώρο για τη μαμά.I bought a present for Mum.
  • Θέλω τσάι χωρίς ζάχαρη.I’d like tea without sugar.

What does «στο» mean in Greek?

«Στο» is «σε» fused with the article «το»: «Μένω στο κέντρο» (I live in the centre). The other articles give «στον» and «στην»: «Πάω στον γιατρό» (I'm going to the doctor), «Δουλεύω στην τράπεζα» (I work at the bank).

When do I use «από» and when «σε»?

«Από» gives the origin: «Είμαι από την Ελβετία» (I'm from Switzerland). «Σε» gives place or direction: «Πάω στον γιατρό» (I'm going to the doctor), «Μένω στο κέντρο» (I live in the centre). After both, the noun is in the accusative.

Why is it «στον κήπο» but «στην παραλία»?

The noun's gender decides: «ο κήπος» gives «στον κήπο» (in the garden), «η παραλία» gives «στην παραλία» (at the beach), and «το νησί» gives «στο νησί» (on the island).
