Irregular verbs
The verbs whose aorist cannot be predicted from the present — few in number, but among the most frequent.
The principle
An irregular verb changes stem between the present and the aorist. There is no rule: these forms are learned in pairs, and they are exactly the verbs you will use most.
- Πέρσι πήγα στην Κρήτη.Last year I went to Crete.
- Ήπια τον καφέ μου πολύ γρήγορα.I drank my coffee very quickly.
- Έφαγα ήδη· δεν πεινάω.I’ve already eaten; I’m not hungry.

Four forms to hold on to
For an irregular verb the present predicts nothing. Hold on to the quartet instead: present, active aorist, passive aorist and passive participle. From those four, every other form can be rebuilt.
- Έδωσα την απάντηση αμέσως.I gave the answer straight away.
- Το γράμμα στάλθηκε χθες.The letter was sent yesterday.
- Το δωμάτιο είναι ήδη παρμένο.The room is already taken.

Group 1: the unpredictable core
These verbs change stem completely. No analogy will save you — and they are precisely the ones you will use most, so the effort pays for itself quickly.
- Δεν είπα τίποτα σε κανέναν.I didn’t say anything to anyone.
- Βρήκα τα κλειδιά κάτω από το τραπέζι.I found the keys under the table.
- Έβγαλα τα παπούτσια μου στην πόρτα.I took my shoes off at the door.
- Έβαλα το φαγητό στο ψυγείο.I put the food in the fridge.

Group 2: verbs in -αίνω
Here there is a hidden regularity: -αίνω loses its syllable in the aorist. Once you see the pattern the whole group becomes predictable — the best return on effort in the whole list.
- Μπήκα στην τάξη πέντε λεπτά αργά.I walked into class five minutes late.
- Ανέβηκα με τα πόδια στον τέταρτο όροφο.I walked up to the fourth floor.
- Δεν κατάλαβα τίποτα από τη διάλεξη.I didn’t understand a thing in the lecture.

Group 3: movement and state
They have no passive, for a logical reason: nobody can be “left” by someone else. The empty column is not a gap in the table — it is what the verb means.
- Έφυγαν νωρίς το πρωί.They left early in the morning.
- Έμεινα σπίτι όλο το Σαββατοκύριακο.I stayed at home all weekend.
- Έτρεξα για να προλάβω το λεωφορείο.I ran to catch the bus.
- Τα φύλλα ήταν πεσμένα στον δρόμο.The leaves lay fallen in the street.

Group 4: passive form, active meaning
The deponents. They end in -ομαι or -άμαι and never existed in -ω. Their translation is entirely active: it is the form that misleads, not the meaning.
- Έγινε γιατρός στα τριάντα του.He became a doctor at thirty.
- Δεν θυμάμαι πού άφησα το τηλέφωνο.I can’t remember where I left my phone.
- Φοβήθηκα πολύ με τον θόρυβο.The noise really frightened me.
- Χρειάστηκα δύο ώρες για να το τελειώσω.It took me two hours to finish it.

How to learn them
Do not try to memorise everything at once: the full list runs to hundreds of entries, but about twenty cover almost everything you will actually say. Learn them inside a sentence, never in isolation — it is the sentence that sticks.
- Χθες είδα μια ταινία.Yesterday I saw a film.
- Αύριο θα δω άλλη.Tomorrow I’ll see another one.
- Ήρθε χθες και θα έρθει πάλι την Παρασκευή.He came yesterday and he’ll come again on Friday.
