The two participles: γράφοντας / γραμμένος

One describes what you do while doing something else, the other the state you are in. Two forms, two opposite grammatical lives.

The two participles: γράφοντας / γραμμένος

The active -οντας: frozen, never agreeing

Built on the present stem, it NEVER changes: γράφοντας, τρέχοντας, βλέποντας, έχοντας — and -ώντας when the stress falls on it: μιλώντας, αγαπώντας, ζητώντας. It expresses simultaneity or means: Περπατώντας στην παραλία, σκεφτόμουν. Έμαθα ελληνικά ακούγοντας τραγούδια.

  • Περπατώντας στην παραλία, σκεφτόμουν.Walking on the beach, I was thinking.
  • Έμαθα ελληνικά ακούγοντας τραγούδια.I learned Greek by listening to songs.
  • Έφυγε τρέχοντας χωρίς να πει τίποτα.He ran off without saying anything.
  • Μιλώντας πιο αργά, θα γίνεις πιο κατανοητός.If you speak more slowly, you’ll be easier to understand.

The passive -μένος: a full adjective

It declines fully — γραμμένος, γραμμένη, γραμμένο, γραμμένοι… — and describes a resulting STATE: Η πόρτα είναι κλειδωμένη. Τα πιάτα είναι πλυμένα. Ο κουρασμένος δρομέας. It comes from the passive stem: γράφτηκα → γραμμένος, ετοιμάστηκα → ετοιμασμένος, κουράστηκα → κουρασμένος.

  • Τα πιάτα είναι πλυμένα.The dishes are washed.
  • Ο κουρασμένος δρομέας κάθισε στο παγκάκι.The tired runner sat down on the bench.
  • Το τραπέζι είναι ήδη ετοιμασμένο.The table is already set.
  • Είναι μια καλά γραμμένη ιστορία.It’s a well-written story.

The state-versus-action trap

Η πόρτα είναι κλειδωμένη = it IS locked (a state, now). Η πόρτα κλειδώθηκε = it WAS locked (an action, at some moment). English blurs the two with “the door is locked”; Greek never does.

  • Η πόρτα είναι κλειδωμένη.The door is locked.
  • Η πόρτα κλειδώθηκε στις δέκα.The door was locked at ten o’clock.
  • Το γράμμα είναι γραμμένο στα ελληνικά.The letter is written in Greek.
  • Το γράμμα γράφτηκε μέσα σε δέκα λεπτά.The letter was written in ten minutes.

What is the difference between «γράφοντας» and «γραμμένος»?

«Γράφοντας» is the active participle: it never changes and expresses simultaneity or means — «Έμαθα ελληνικά ακούγοντας τραγούδια» (I learned Greek by listening to songs). «Γραμμένος» is a full adjective describing a resulting state — «Τα πιάτα είναι πλυμένα» (the dishes are washed).

Does the Greek gerund in -οντας ever agree?

Never — it is frozen: «γράφοντας», «τρέχοντας», «βλέποντας», «έχοντας», and -ώντας when the stress falls on it: «μιλώντας», «αγαπώντας», «ζητώντας». «Περπατώντας στην παραλία, σκεφτόμουν» (walking on the beach, I was thinking).

What is the difference between «Η πόρτα είναι κλειδωμένη» and «Η πόρτα κλειδώθηκε»?

The first describes a state now (the door is locked), the second an action at a given moment: «Η πόρτα κλειδώθηκε στις δέκα» (the door was locked at ten). English blurs the two; Greek never does.
