Numbers II: dates, fractions, multiples

Dates: στις τρεις Μαΐου

The day uses a cardinal (στις τρεις Ιουνίου, στις είκοσι πέντε Μαρτίου) — EXCEPT the first of the month, which is ordinal: την πρώτη Απριλίου. The month goes in the genitive: Μαΐου, Ιουνίου, Δεκεμβρίου. Years are read as one big number: το δύο χιλιάδες είκοσι έξι.

• Έχω ραντεβού στον γιατρό στις τρεις Ιουνίου.I have a doctor’s appointment on the third of June.
• Την πρώτη Απριλίου λέμε ψέματα για πλάκα.On the first of April we tell lies for fun.
• Ο αδερφός μου γεννήθηκε το δύο χιλιάδες δέκα.My brother was born in two thousand and ten.

Fractions and percentages

μισός agrees: μισό κιλό, μισή ώρα. “And a half”: ενάμισης / μιάμιση / ενάμισι — and δυόμισι ώρες (two and a half hours). Fractions use the neuter ordinal: το ένα τρίτο, τα δύο πέμπτα, τα τρία τέταρτα. Percent: το είκοσι τοις εκατό (20%).

• Θα πάρω μισό κιλό ντομάτες από τον μανάβη.I’ll get half a kilo of tomatoes from the greengrocer.
• Το ταξίδι με το τρένο κρατάει δυόμισι ώρες.The train journey takes two and a half hours.
• Τα δύο τρίτα των μαθητών πέρασαν τις εξετάσεις.Two thirds of the students passed the exams.
• Το είκοσι τοις εκατό των εισιτηρίων πουλήθηκε την πρώτη μέρα.Twenty percent of the tickets sold on the first day.

διπλός or διπλάσιος? — and the χιλιάδες

διπλός = double in form (διπλό κρεβάτι: a double bed), διπλάσιος = twice as much (διπλάσια τιμή: double the price) — likewise τριπλός/τριπλάσιος. The quantity nouns decline: δεκάδες, εκατοντάδες, χιλιάδες τουρίστες — and χίλια → δύο χιλιάδες, τρεις χιλιάδες (feminine!).

• Κλείσαμε ένα δωμάτιο με διπλό κρεβάτι.We booked a room with a double bed.
• Τον Αύγουστο το ξενοδοχείο έχει διπλάσια τιμή.In August the hotel costs twice as much.
• Χιλιάδες τουρίστες ανεβαίνουν στην Ακρόπολη κάθε καλοκαίρι.Thousands of tourists climb up to the Acropolis every summer.
