Impersonal verbs and fixed constructions
πρόκειται να, αξίζει να, απαγορεύεται, μου αρέσει: the verbs with no subject — and those whose subject is elsewhere.
Everyday and written impersonals
Always 3rd person + να: πρέπει να (one must), πρόκειται να (it is planned that), αξίζει να (it’s worth), συμφέρει να (it pays to), απαγορεύεται να (it is forbidden to), επιτρέπεται να. On signs, with a noun and no να: Απαγορεύεται το κάπνισμα.
- Απαγορεύεται το κάπνισμα σε όλους τους κλειστούς χώρους.Smoking is forbidden in all indoor areas.
- Πρόκειται να ανακοινωθούν τα αποτελέσματα την Παρασκευή.The results are due to be announced on Friday.
- Αξίζει να δεις την έκθεση πριν κλείσει.The exhibition is worth seeing before it closes.
Weather verbs
No subject possible: βρέχει (it rains), χιονίζει (it snows), φυσάει (it’s windy), έχει ζέστη/κρύο (it’s hot/cold), νυχτώνει (night falls). Past: έβρεξε, χιόνισε.
- Βρέχει από το πρωί.It has been raining since morning.
- Χθες έβρεχε όλη μέρα, ενώ σήμερα απλώς φυσάει.Yesterday it rained all day, whereas today it is just windy.
- Τον Δεκέμβριο νυχτώνει νωρίς.In December night falls early.
The subject is elsewhere: μου αρέσει, μου φαίνεται
In Μου αρέσουν τα σουβλάκια, the grammatical subject is τα σουβλάκια — the verb agrees with them, not with me. Same pattern: μου φαίνεται (it seems to me), μου πάει (it suits me), μου λείπει (I miss): Μου λείπουν οι φίλοι μου.
- Μου αρέσουν τα σουβλάκια.I like souvlaki.
- Μου λείπουν οι φίλοι μου.I miss my friends.
- Μου φαίνεται ότι κάτι δεν πάει καλά.It seems to me that something is wrong.
