The aorist in both voices: έγραψα / γράφτηκα

You have known έγραψα since Α2. Here is the whole system: which consonant yields ψ, ξ or σ, and how the same verb makes γράφτηκε in the passive.

The aorist in both voices: έγραψα / γράφτηκα

The consonant table

The aorist's -σ- fuses with the stem's consonant, and the result is predictable. Once this table is known, the aorist of almost any regular verb follows.

  • Έγραψα το γράμμα χθες το βράδυ.I wrote the letter last night.
  • Άνοιξα το παράθυρο γιατί έκανε ζέστη.I opened the window because it was hot.
  • Αγόρασα εισιτήρια για τη συναυλία.I bought tickets for the concert.

The passive: -θηκα and its variants

The endings never change — -θηκα, -θηκες, -θηκε, -θήκαμε, -θήκατε, -θηκαν — and attach to the same aorist stem: γράφ-τηκα, ανοίχ-τηκα, αγοράσ-τηκα, αγαπή-θηκα. Note -τ- after ψ/ξ/σ stems and -θ- after a vowel.

The letter was written in Greek.
The envelope was opened carefully.
The tickets were bought online.
He was much loved by his students.

The active / passive pair in context

The same scene, two angles: Ο Θεοδωράκης έγραψε αυτό το τραγούδι. The agent returns with από: Το γράμμα στάλθηκε από τη Μαρία. The passive picks what matters: the result, not the doer.

Theodorakis wrote this song.
  • Αυτό το τραγούδι γράφτηκε το 1960.This song was written in 1960.
The letter was sent by Maria.

How do you form the aorist of a Greek verb?

The aorist’s -σ- fuses with the stem’s consonant, predictably: «γράφω → έγραψα» (π, β, φ give ψ), «ανοίγω → άνοιξα» (κ, γ, χ give ξ), «αγοράζω → αγόρασα» (ζ, σ give σ). «Έγραψα το γράμμα χθες το βράδυ» (I wrote the letter last night).

How do you make the passive aorist in Greek?

With the endings -θηκα, -θηκες, -θηκε, -θήκαμε, -θήκατε, -θηκαν on the aorist stem: «γράφτηκα», «ανοίχτηκα», «αγαπήθηκα». Note -τ- after ψ, ξ, σ stems and -θ- after a vowel: «Το γράμμα γράφτηκε στα ελληνικά» (the letter was written in Greek).

How do you say by someone in a Greek passive sentence?

With «από» + accusative: «Το γράμμα στάλθηκε από τη Μαρία» (the letter was sent by Maria). The passive picks what matters — the result rather than the doer: «Αυτό το τραγούδι γράφτηκε το 1960» (this song was written in 1960).
