Indefinites: κάποιος, κανείς, τίποτα

Someone, something, no one, nothing — and the double life of κανείς, which means “none” with δεν but “anyone” in a question.

Indefinites: κάποιος, κανείς, τίποτα

The positive set

κάποιος (someone) and κάτι (something, invariable); μερικοί (a few); κάθε (each, invariable); όλος (all, agreeing); άλλος (other). Κάποιος agrees like an adjective: κάποια μέρα, κάποιο πρόβλημα.

  • Κάποιος σε ζητάει στο τηλέφωνο.Someone is asking for you on the phone.
  • Θέλω κάτι να φάω πριν από το μάθημα.I want something to eat before the lesson.
  • Κάποια μέρα θα πάμε μαζί στην Κρήτη.Some day we’ll go to Crete together.

The double life of κανείς and τίποτα

With δεν, negative meaning: Δεν ήρθε κανείς (nobody came), Δεν θέλω τίποτα (I want nothing). In a question, positive: Ήρθε κανείς; (did anyone come?), Θέλεις τίποτα; (do you want anything?). Same word, two polarities — context decides.

  • Δεν ήρθε κανείς στη συνάντηση.Nobody came to the meeting.
  • Ήρθε κανείς όσο έλειπα;Did anyone come while I was away?
  • Δεν θέλω τίποτα, ευχαριστώ.I don’t want anything, thanks.
  • Θέλεις τίποτα από το περίπτερο;Do you want anything from the kiosk?

όλος and κάθε

όλος + article: όλη η μέρα (the whole day), όλοι οι φίλοι μου (all my friends). κάθε without article: κάθε μέρα (every day). Classic trap: “everyone” = όλος ο κόσμος.

  • Όλοι οι φίλοι μου ήρθαν στα γενέθλιά μου.All my friends came to my birthday.
  • Πηγαίνω στη δουλειά με το ποδήλατο κάθε μέρα.I go to work by bike every day.
  • Τα κλειδιά είναι κάπου εδώ, αλλά δεν τα βρίσκω πουθενά.The keys are somewhere here, but I can’t find them anywhere.

Често задавани въпроси

Does κανείς mean “nobody” or “anybody”?

Both — polarity decides. With «δεν» it is negative: «Δεν ήρθε κανείς» (nobody came). In a question it is positive: «Ήρθε κανείς;» (did anyone come?). The same holds for «τίποτα».

What is the difference between κάθε and όλος?

«Κάθε» is invariable, takes no article and means “every”: «κάθε μέρα» (every day). «Όλος» agrees and takes the article: «όλη η μέρα» (the whole day), «όλοι οι φίλοι μου» (all my friends). “Everyone” is «όλος ο κόσμος».

How do you say “someone” and “something” in Greek?

«Κάποιος» (someone) agrees like an adjective: «κάποια μέρα» (some day), «κάποιο πρόβλημα» (some problem). «Κάτι» (something) never changes: «Θέλω κάτι να φάω» (I want something to eat).
