Agreement

The adjective takes the gender, number and case of the noun it describes — even when the verb “to be” separates them.

  • Ο καιρός είναι καλός σήμερα.The weather is good today.
  • Είδα μια ωραία ταινία.I saw a nice film.
  • Τα νέα είναι καλά.The news is good.

Position of the adjective

An attributive adjective normally stands between the article and the noun: ο καλός φίλος. After the noun, the article is repeated for emphasis: ο φίλος ο καλός.

  • Η μικρή πλατεία έχει δύο καφενεία.The little square has two cafés.
  • Θέλω το ποτήρι το μεγάλο.I want the big glass.
  • Ο φίλος είναι καλός.The friend is kind.

Irregular πολύς

Πολύς (much / many) is irregular: πολύς καφές, πολλή δουλειά, πολύ νερό; plural πολλοί, πολλές, πολλά. Don’t confuse it with the invariable adverb πολύ (very).

  • Έχω πολλή δουλειά αυτή την εβδομάδα.I have a lot of work this week.
  • Ήρθαν πολλοί τουρίστες φέτος.Many tourists came this year.

How does a Greek adjective agree with its noun?

It takes the gender, number and case of the noun, even when the verb «είμαι» stands between them: «Ο Νίκος είναι καλός μαθητής», «Η Άννα είναι καλή φίλη», «Αυτό είναι ένα καλό βιβλίο» (a good pupil / a good friend / a good book).

Where does the adjective go in relation to the noun in Greek?

Normally between the article and the noun: «ο καλός φίλος», «Η μικρή πλατεία έχει δύο καφενεία». After the noun the article is repeated for emphasis: «Θέλω το ποτήρι το μεγάλο» (I want the big glass).

What is the difference between «πολύ» and «πολύς» in Greek?

«πολύς» is an irregular adjective and agrees: «πολύς καφές», «πολλή δουλειά», «πολύ νερό», plural «πολλοί, πολλές, πολλά». «πολύ» on its own is the invariable adverb “very”: «Είναι πολύ καλός» (he is very good).
