Adjectives in -ων, -ουσα, -ον

Επείγων, παρών, ενδιαφέρων: old participles turned adjectives, everywhere in formal Greek and mis-declined by almost everyone.

Adjectives in -ων, -ουσα, -ον

The form and how it declines

Masculine in -ων, feminine in -ουσα, neuter in -ον. The trap is the masculine and neuter genitive: του ενδιαφέροντος, never “του ενδιαφέροντα”.

How does the adjective ενδιαφέρων decline?

Masculine in -ων, feminine in -ουσα, neuter in -ον. The trap is the masculine and neuter genitive: «του ενδιαφέροντος άρθρου» (of the interesting article), never «του ενδιαφέροντα».

Which -ων adjectives are the most frequent?

«Επείγων» (urgent), «παρών / απών» (present / absent), «μέλλων» (future), «υπάρχων» (existing), «τυχών» (any given): «Πρόκειται για επείγον περιστατικό» (this is an urgent case).

Why is το ενδιαφέρον confusing?

It is a homograph: in the neuter it is the adjective “interesting” («το ενδιαφέρον άρθρο»), but it is also the noun “interest” («έδειξε ενδιαφέρον για τη θέση», he showed interest in the post).
