Adverbial clauses: when, because, so that

Five clause families answering five questions: when? why? what for? with what result? despite what?

Adverbial clauses: when, because, so that

Time and cause: όταν, μόλις, επειδή

WHEN: όταν (when), μόλις (as soon as), πριν (before), αφού (after), ενώ (while) — Μόλις έφτασα, χτύπησε το τηλέφωνο. Note αφού's double role: time AND cause.

As soon as I got home, the phone rang.
  • Δεν βγήκα χθες το βράδυ επειδή έβρεχε πολύ.I didn’t go out last night because it was raining hard.
Before you leave, turn off the lights and lock the door.
Since it’s raining, we’ll stay indoors.

Purpose and result: για να, ώστε

PURPOSE (so that): για να + subjunctive — Διαβάζω για να περάσω τις εξετάσεις. RESULT (so… that): τόσο… Purpose looks forward; result states what followed.

  • Διαβάζω κάθε βράδυ για να περάσω τις εξετάσεις.I study every evening so that I pass my exams.
He was so tired that he fell asleep on the sofa.
It was so cold that the water froze.

The clause concedes a true fact that could have prevented everything — and the main clause goes ahead anyway.

Although it was raining, we went out for a walk.
Even though he’s young, he speaks three languages.
Although he worked all night, he arrived on time.

What is the difference between επειδή and γιατί?

Both express cause, but «γιατί» also asks the question “why?”. «Επειδή» only introduces a reason and can open the sentence: «Δεν βγήκα επειδή έβρεχε» (I didn’t go out because it was raining). Note «αφού», which carries both time and cause.

How do you express purpose in Greek, like “so that”?

With «για να» + subjunctive: «Διαβάζω για να περάσω τις εξετάσεις» (I study so that I pass the exams). Do not confuse it with result, «τόσο… Purpose looks forward; result states what followed.

How do you say “although” in Greek?

With «αν και» or «παρόλο που» + indicative: «Αν και έβρεχε, βγήκαμε βόλτα» (although it was raining, we went out), «Παρόλο που είναι μικρός, μιλάει τρεις γλώσσες». The clause concedes a true fact, and the main clause goes ahead anyway.
