Yesterday and tomorrow: πήγα — θα πάω
First meeting with past and future: the ten verbs that tell yesterday (πήγα, είδα, έφαγα) — and the θα that sends them to tomorrow.
One stem, two directions
Greek builds yesterday AND tomorrow from the SAME stem: πήγα (I went) → θα πάω (I will go). Είδα → θα δω. Έφαγα → θα φάω. Learn the past and the future comes free: just add θα.
- Χθες πήγα στην Αθήνα.Yesterday I went to Athens.
- Αύριο θα πάω στην Αθήνα.Tomorrow I’ll go to Athens.
- Χθες έφαγα ψάρι, αύριο θα φάω κρέας.Yesterday I ate fish, tomorrow I’ll eat meat.

The past endings
All the same, for every verb: -α, -ες, -ε, -αμε, -ατε, -αν. Πήγα, πήγες, πήγε, πήγαμε, πήγατε, πήγαν. Just one set to learn!

With the time words
Χθες πήγα στη θάλασσα. Αύριο θα πάω στη δουλειά. Το Σάββατο θα δω τους φίλους μου. Πέρσι ήπια τον πρώτο μου ελληνικό καφέ! The time word announces the form: χθες/πέρσι → past, αύριο/μεθαύριο → θα.

How do you form the future tense in Greek?
Put «θα» before the verb: «Αύριο θα πάω στην Αθήνα» (tomorrow I will go to Athens). Past and future share the same stem, so «πήγα» (I went) gives «θα πάω» (I will go) for free.
What are the past-tense endings in Greek?
One set for every verb: -α, -ες, -ε, -αμε, -ατε, -αν, as in «πήγα, πήγες, πήγε, πήγαμε, πήγατε, πήγαν» (I went, you went, he went…). There is only this one table to learn.
How do I know whether to use the past or the future?
