Learned comparatives and superlatives
Βέλτιστος, χείριστος, ελάχιστος: inherited suppletive forms, still alive in technical and administrative Greek.
The suppletive sets
Each common adjective has a parallel learned set. The modern form stays correct everywhere; the learned one belongs to fixed collocations — «βέλτιστες πρακτικές», «ελάχιστος μισθός».
- Εφαρμόζουμε τις βέλτιστες διεθνείς πρακτικές.We apply international best practice.
- Ο ελάχιστος μισθός αυξήθηκε από την πρώτη Απριλίου.The minimum wage rose as of 1 April.
- Πρόκειται για μείζον πολιτικό θέμα.This is a major political issue.
- Το ζήτημα κρίθηκε ήσσονος σημασίας.The matter was deemed of minor importance.

Collocations worth keeping
You do not invent these forms: you learn them as blocks. Βέλτιστες πρακτικές, ελάχιστος μισθός, μείζον θέμα, ήσσονος σημασίας. Using αμείνων in conversation would sound as odd as a Latinism.

What does «βέλτιστες πρακτικές» mean?
“Best practices”. «Βέλτιστος» is the learned superlative of «καλός», alive in fixed collocations: «Εφαρμόζουμε τις βέλτιστες διεθνείς πρακτικές» (we apply international best practices). In everyday Greek the superlative is «ο καλύτερος».
When should I use these learned comparatives instead of the modern forms?
Only in the set phrases that own them: «ελάχιστος μισθός» (minimum wage), «μείζον θέμα» (major issue), «ήσσονος σημασίας» (of lesser importance). You do not invent them — using «αμείνων» in conversation would sound as odd as a Latinism.
What is the learned equivalent of «χειρότερος»?
«Χείριστος». The modern «χειρότερος» stays correct everywhere; the learned form belongs to administrative and journalistic writing: «το χείριστο σενάριο» (the worst-case scenario).
