Spelling dilemmas
λίπη or λύπη? κτίριο or κτήριο? The iota homophones and the words with two official spellings.
Six letters, one sound [i]
ι, η, υ, ει, οι, υι are all pronounced [i]: spelling is etymological, not phonetic. Minimal pairs to memorise: λίπη (fats) / λύπη (sorrow), φύλο (gender) / φύλλο (leaf) / φίλο (friend, acc.), κλίμα (climate) / κλήμα (vine), ψηλός (tall) / ψιλός (thin, fine).
Sorrow weighs on the soul, fats on the heart.
Gender is stated on the identity card; the leaf falls from the tree.
The tall man was wearing a fine gold chain.
The climate has changed and the vine bore no fruit this year.
The double-spelling words
A few words have two accepted spellings, the legacy of etymological debates: κτίριο/κτήριο, αυγό/αβγό, τρένο/τραίνο (the first now dominates), μαζί (never μαζύ!). Pick ONE spelling and keep it throughout a text — consistency wins.
The ministry’s new building was inaugurated yesterday.
- Θέλω δύο αυγά για την ομελέτα.I need two eggs for the omelette.
We took the six o’clock train.
We came together and we’ll leave together.
The highest-frequency traps
ότι (that) / ό,τι (whatever) — πως (that) / πώς (how?) — που (relative) / πού (where?) — η (article) / ή (or) — μια / μία. These five pairs account for half the mistakes of Γ2 candidates — and of Greeks themselves.
He said that he would come; take whatever you like.
- Το σπίτι που αγόρασε — πού βρίσκεται;The house that he bought — where is it?
He told me that he had managed it, but he didn’t tell me how.
- Θα έρθει η Άννα ή η Μαρία;Will Anna or Maria be coming?
