Where these forms come from

Until 1976 the official language was katharevousa, an archaising variety. Demotic replaced it, but thousands of learned forms stayed behind — indispensable for reading a newspaper, a contract or an official sign.

• Απαγορεύεται η είσοδος εις μη έχοντας εργασίαν.No admittance except on business.
• Ο υπογεγραμμένος δηλώνω υπευθύνως ότι τα ανωτέρω στοιχεία είναι αληθή.I, the undersigned, solemnly declare that the above details are true.
• Ουδεμία απάντηση εδόθη από το αρμόδιο υπουργείο.No reply was given by the competent ministry.

Fossilised datives

The dative vanished from the living grammar but survives in ready-made expressions. Learn them as vocabulary — their frequency is formidable.

• Εν τω μεταξύ, η κατάσταση είχε αλλάξει άρδην.In the meantime, the situation had changed radically.
• Πλήρωσε τοις μετρητοίς, χωρίς να ζητήσει απόδειξη.He paid in cash, without asking for a receipt.
• Εν πάση περιπτώσει, το θέμα θα επανεξεταστεί την Τρίτη.In any case, the matter will be reconsidered on Tuesday.
• Δόξα τω Θεώ, όλα πήγαν καλά.Thank goodness, everything went well.

Ancient prepositions

υπέρ (in favour of) and κατά (against) + genitive; προ (before), περί (about), επί (in the time of, upon), εκ/εξ (out of), διά (through). You meet them mostly in the press and headlines: υπέρ της ειρήνης, κατά της βίας.

• Οργανώθηκε συλλαλητήριο υπέρ της ειρήνης.A rally in favour of peace was organised.
• Το νομοσχέδιο ψηφίστηκε προ ολίγων ημερών.The bill was passed a few days ago.
• Το αίτημα διαβιβάστηκε διά της αρμόδιας υπηρεσίας.The request was forwarded through the competent department.
• Ο φάκελος εξετάστηκε εκ νέου από την επιτροπή.The file was examined anew by the committee.

Learned nouns and adjectives

Archaic genitives: της πόλεως (beside της πόλης), της κυβερνήσεως. Learned declined participles: ο ενδιαφερόμενος (the interested party), η προϊσταμένη (the superior), το λεχθέν (what was said). The adjective ενδιαφέρων / ενδιαφέρουσα / ενδιαφέρον declines the ancient way — neuter ενδιαφέρον is not a typo.

• Ο δήμαρχος της πόλεως παρέστη στην τελετή.The mayor of the city attended the ceremony.
• Η απόφαση της κυβερνήσεως ανακοινώθηκε το μεσημέρι.The government’s decision was announced at midday.
• Η προϊσταμένη του τμήματος υπέγραψε το έγγραφο.The head of the department signed the document.
• Το λεχθέν δεν καταγράφηκε στα πρακτικά.What was said was not entered in the minutes.

Register doublets

The same meaning often exists as two words: an everyday one and a learned one. Choosing the right one is exactly the Γ1 skill — a CV in casual language or a friendly email in learned language both ring false.

• Δεν έχω λεφτά μέχρι το τέλος του μήνα.I’ve got no money until the end of the month.
• Τα χρήματα θα κατατεθούν στον λογαριασμό σας εντός πέντε ημερών.The funds will be deposited into your account within five days.
• Επί του παρόντος δεν προβλέπεται καμία αλλαγή.At present no change is envisaged.
• Το έγγραφο ανευρέθη στο αρχείο της υπηρεσίας.The document was located in the department’s archive.
