In Greek, first names, countries and cities take the article: Η Μαρία μένει στην Ελλάδα. A tiny rule that changes everything.
The article before first names
You say Ο Νίκος δουλεύει, Η Μαρία διαβάζει — never a bare first name as subject. The name declines too: Βλέπω τον Νίκο. Μιλάω με τη Μαρία. Nothing like English — and natural within a week.

Countries, cities, languages
Same rule: η Ελλάδα, η Ελβετία, το Παρίσι, η Αθήνα. You meet it mostly with σε: Μένω στην Ελβετία, πάω στην Αθήνα. Languages are a neuter plural WITHOUT a capital: Μιλάω ελληνικά και γαλλικά.

Calling someone: Νίκο! Μαρία!
To call someone, NO article — and -ος names drop their -ς: Νίκο, έλα εδώ! Γιώργο! Feminine names stay the same: Μαρία! Ελένη! Politely: Κύριε Παπαδόπουλε! Κυρία Δήμου!

Why do Greek first names take an article?
Because in Greek a first name behaves like any other noun: «Ο Νίκος δουλεύει» (Nikos is working), «Η Μαρία διαβάζει» (Maria is reading). The name declines too: «Βλέπω τον Νίκο» (I see Nikos).
Do country and city names take the article in Greek?
Yes: «η Ελλάδα», «η Ελβετία», «η Αθήνα», «το Παρίσι». You meet them mostly with «σε»: «Μένω στην Ελβετία» (I live in Switzerland), «Πάω στην Αθήνα» (I'm going to Athens). Languages, by contrast, are neuter plural and take no capital: «Μιλάω ελληνικά».
