The ghost τα

In τα κατάφερα (I managed), τα πάμε καλά (we get along), τα παράτησα (I quit), τα βρήκαμε (we came to terms), the τα stands for no noun — it is part of the verb. Learn the whole expression as one word.

την and τη: more ghosts

την πάτησα (I got fooled / burned), τη γλίτωσα (a narrow escape), την κάνω (slip away — casual), το ρίχνω στη δουλειά (throw myself into work). Whether the frozen pronoun is feminine or neuter varies by expression — no rule, only usage.

• Την πάτησα άσχημα με εκείνη τη συμφωνία.I got badly burned on that deal.
• Τη γλίτωσα την τελευταία στιγμή.I had a narrow escape at the last second.
• Μόλις άρχισαν οι ερωτήσεις, την έκανε.As soon as the questions started, he slipped away.

Verbal periphrases to know

κάνω πως (pretend to), πάω να (be about to: πήγα να πέσω), έχω να (not having done for: έχω να τον δω χρόνια — I haven’t seen him in years), όλο και (more and more: όλο και καλυτερεύει), από… σε… (from… to…: από μέρα σε μέρα).

• Έκανε πως δεν με είδε και προσπέρασε.He pretended not to see me and walked on by.
