Α2

The second conjugation: μιλάω, μπορώ

Verbs stressed on the ending have their own endings — in two families: μιλάω, μιλάς… and μπορώ, μπορείς…

Two conjugations, one stress difference

γράφω is stressed on the stem: that is the 1st conjugation. μιλάω and μπορώ are stressed on the ending: that is the 2nd. This stress difference drives all the present-tense endings.

  • γράφω — α΄ συζυγίαI write — 1st conjugation, stress on the stem
  • μιλάω — β΄ συζυγία, α΄ ομάδαI speak — 2nd conjugation, group 1, stress on the ending
  • μπορώ — β΄ συζυγία, β΄ ομάδαI can — 2nd conjugation, group 2

Type A: μιλάω, μιλάς

The big -άω family: speak, love, ask… Two forms often coexist (μιλάω = μιλώ, μιλάει = μιλά) — both are correct; the -άω column is the more colloquial.

  • Μιλάω λίγο ελληνικά.I speak a little Greek.
  • Η Μαρία αγαπάει τη μουσική.Maria loves music.
  • Τι ρωτάς;What are you asking?

Type B: μπορώ, μπορείς

The -ώ / -είς family: can, live, drive, phone… No double forms here — the endings are fixed: -ώ, -είς, -εί, -ούμε, -είτε, -ούν.

  • Μπορείς να με βοηθήσεις;Can you help me?
  • Ο πατέρας μου οδηγεί προσεκτικά.My father drives carefully.

Memorise the family together with the verb. Type A: αγαπάω, ρωτάω, ξυπνάω, περπατάω, γελάω, ξεχνάω. Type B: μπορώ, ζω, οδηγώ, τηλεφωνώ, αργώ, ευχαριστώ. When in doubt, a dictionary gives the 2nd person.

  • αγαπάω — αγαπάςto love — you love (group 1)
  • μπορώ — μπορείςto be able — you can (group 2)
  • ζω — ζειςto live — you live (group 2, very short stem)
