Γ1

The pronoun system: demonstrative, indefinite, reflexive, relative

The four sets met separately at earlier levels, set side by side — because at Γ1 the problem is no longer the form but the choice between them.

Demonstratives: distance

Αυτός is near or already mentioned; εκείνος is far or contrastive; τέτοιος qualifies, τόσος quantifies. In a text αυτός picks up the most recent item and εκείνος the earlier one — an economical way to keep two referents apart.

  • Κράτησα αυτό το άρθρο, όχι εκείνο που διάβασα χθες.I kept this article, not the one I read yesterday.
  • Αυτή η πρόταση στέκει· εκείνη, την περασμένη εβδομάδα, δεν έστεκε.This proposal holds up; that one, last week, did not.

Indefinites: quantity and identity

Κάποιος (a certain), κανένας (no one / anyone in questions), κάθε and καθένας (each / each one), όλος, μερικοί, άλλος, ο ίδιος. Note: κανένας is negative with δεν but interrogative without it — «Ήρθε κανένας;» means “Did anyone come?”

  • Κάποιος σε ζήτησε στο τηλέφωνο.Someone asked for you on the phone.
  • Δεν ήρθε κανείς στη συνάντηση.Nobody came to the meeting.
  • Ήρθε κανείς όσο έλειπα;Did anyone come while I was away?
  • Κάθε μαθητής πήρε ένα βιβλίο και ο καθένας διάλεξε μόνος του.Every pupil got a book, and each one chose for himself.

Reflexives and relatives

The Greek reflexive is a noun: ο εαυτός μου, τον εαυτό σου — it declines and carries the possessive. Do not confuse it with ο ίδιος, which stresses identity (“the director himself”). For relatives, που covers nearly everything; ο οποίος is required after a preposition and to remove ambiguity.
