Indeclinable and double-plural nouns
το ταξί, το σινεμά never change; ο χρόνος has two plurals that mean different things — οι χρόνοι and τα χρόνια.

Indeclinables: the traveller words
Loanwords do not decline: το ταξί / του ταξί / τα ταξί, το σινεμά, το μετρό, η σεζόν… The rule: if the word came from abroad and doesn’t end like a Greek noun, only the article changes.
- Πήγαμε στο κέντρο με δύο ταξί.We went into town in two taxis.
- Η ταινία παίζει σε τρία σινεμά.The film is showing in three cinemas.
- Ο θόρυβος των πάρτι ενοχλεί τους γείτονες.The noise of the parties bothers the neighbours.
- Ήπια δύο καφέδες σήμερα.I’ve had two coffees today.
The double plurals
A few masculines have a masculine AND a neuter plural, with different meanings. ο χρόνος: οι χρόνοι (grammatical tenses) / τα χρόνια (years). ο λόγος: οι λόγοι (reasons, speeches) / τα λόγια (words). ο βράχος: οι βράχοι / τα βράχια (rocks). The neuter plural is the more concrete and the more common one.
- Μένω εδώ πέντε χρόνια.I’ve been living here for five years.
- Οι χρόνοι του ρήματος είναι οκτώ.The verb has eight tenses.
- Για ποιους λόγους άργησες;For what reasons were you late?
- Τα λόγια του με έπεισαν.His words convinced me.

Често задавани въпроси
Why does «το ταξί» never change in the plural?
Because it is a loanword that does not end like a Greek noun: only the article changes — «το ταξί / του ταξί / τα ταξί». The same goes for «το σινεμά», «το μετρό», «η σεζόν»: «Πήγαμε στο κέντρο με δύο ταξί» (we went into town in two taxis).
What is the difference between «οι χρόνοι» and «τα χρόνια»?
Both are plurals of «ο χρόνος», but they mean different things: «οι χρόνοι» = grammatical tenses («Οι χρόνοι του ρήματος είναι οκτώ»), «τα χρόνια» = years («Μένω εδώ πέντε χρόνια» — I have lived here five years). The neuter plural is always the concrete one.
How do you ask someone their age in Greek?
You say «Πόσων χρονών είσαι;» — «χρονών» is the genitive of «τα χρόνια». The same family gives «Χρόνια πολλά!» (happy birthday) and, from «ο λόγος», the plural «τα λόγια»: «Τα λόγια σου με πλήγωσαν» (your words hurt me).
