ωστόσο, επομένως, εξάλλου, αφενός… αφετέρου: the hinges that turn sentences into an argument.
The toolbox, by function
One connective per sentence is enough; two is noise.
- Η πρόταση είναι ενδιαφέρουσα· ωστόσο, το κόστος παραμένει υψηλό.The proposal is interesting; however, the cost remains high.
- Τα στοιχεία είναι σαφή· επομένως, απαιτείται άμεση δράση.The data are clear; therefore, immediate action is required.
- Δεδομένου ότι ο χρόνος πιέζει, θα συντομεύσουμε τη συζήτηση.Given that time is short, we will keep the discussion brief.
- Εν κατακλείδι, τα οφέλη υπερτερούν των κινδύνων.In conclusion, the benefits outweigh the risks.

Small differences that matter
ωστόσο opens or follows the sentence, never glued after και. εξάλλου = “besides” (a reinforcing argument). άρα is more spoken, συνεπώς more written. αφενός demands its αφετέρου — dropping it is a classic exam mistake.
- Δεν συμφωνώ· εξάλλου, δεν με ρώτησε κανείς.I don’t agree; besides, nobody asked me.
- Άρα δεν έρχεσαι τελικά;So you’re not coming after all?
- Η μελέτη ολοκληρώθηκε· συνεπώς, το έργο μπορεί να προχωρήσει.The study is complete; consequently, the project can move forward.
- Αφενός μεν το κόστος αυξάνεται, αφετέρου δε η ζήτηση μειώνεται.On the one hand costs are rising, on the other demand is falling.

What is the difference between άρα and συνεπώς?
Register: «άρα» is more spoken («Άρα δεν έρχεσαι τελικά;», so you are not coming after all?), «συνεπώς» more written («Η μελέτη ολοκληρώθηκε· συνεπώς, το έργο μπορεί να προχωρήσει»). «Ωστόσο» opens or follows the sentence but is never glued after «και».
Why can αφενός not stand alone?
Because it announces a pair: «αφενός… αφετέρου». Dropping the second half is a classic exam mistake. Similarly «εξάλλου» introduces a reinforcing argument: «Δεν συμφωνώ· εξάλλου, δεν με ρώτησε κανείς» (I disagree; besides, nobody asked me).
