Register: a grammar of context
The same meaning can be said three ways: casual, neutral, formal. Picking the right column is the skill that defines Γ1.
Three columns for every message
Register runs through lexicon, grammar and even phonetics (θα σου πω / θα σας έλεγα).
- Θα σου πω αύριο τι γίνεται με τα λεφτά.I’ll tell you tomorrow what’s up with the money.
- Θα σε ενημερώσω αύριο για τα χρήματα.I’ll let you know about the money tomorrow.
- Θα σας ενημερώσω αύριο σχετικά με το χρηματικό ποσό.I shall inform you tomorrow regarding the sum in question.

The grammar of formality
Style rises through: the passive (θα εξεταστεί το αίτημα rather than θα το κοιτάξουμε), the genitive (η λύση του προβλήματος), participles (οι αιτούντες), learned prepositions (βάσει, μέσω). It falls through: diminutives (καφεδάκι), interjections, chatty repetitions.
- Θα το κοιτάξουμε το αίτημά σου.We’ll take a look at your request.
- Το αίτημα θα εξεταστεί από την αρμόδια υπηρεσία.The request will be examined by the competent department.
- Οι αιτούντες ενημερώνονται μέσω ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου.Applicants are notified by email.
- Πάμε για ένα καφεδάκι;Shall we go for a quick coffee?
The style crime: mixing
Αξιότιμε κύριε, τα λεφτά που μου χρωστάτε… — the solemn opening and the casual word clash. Before writing, choose your column; when revising, hunt the intruder. A successful Γ1 text is homogeneous more than brilliant.
- Αξιότιμε κύριε, τα λεφτά που μου χρωστάτε…Dear Sir, the cash you owe me… (clashing registers)
- Αξιότιμε κύριε, το οφειλόμενο ποσό παραμένει ανεξόφλητο.Dear Sir, the sum owed remains unpaid.
- Γιάννη, πότε θα μου δώσεις τα λεφτά που μου χρωστάς;Yannis, when are you going to give me back the money you owe me?
