Polysemy, synonyms, collocations
γλώσσα is both tongue and language; παίρνω τηλέφωνο but κάνω μπάνιο: at Γ1 the right word is a matter of neighbourhood.

One word, several senses
γλώσσα: the organ, the spoken language, the sole (the fish!). γράμμα: the alphabet letter and the postal letter. ώρα: the hour and the right moment (είναι ώρα να φύγουμε). Context chooses — read it, not the isolated word.
- Έκαψα τη γλώσσα μου με τον καφέ.I burnt my tongue on the coffee.
- Η ελληνική γλώσσα έχει ιστορία τριών χιλιάδων ετών.The Greek language has three thousand years of history.
- Παραγγείλαμε γλώσσα στα κάρβουνα.We ordered grilled sole.
- Επιτέλους μιλάμε την ίδια γλώσσα.At last we’re speaking the same language.
Synonyms that aren’t
κοιτάζω (look) / βλέπω (see) — φέρνω (bring) / παίρνω (take) — ξέρω (know a fact) / γνωρίζω (be acquainted, more formal) — ακούω (hear AND listen: Greek doesn’t split them!). The nuance lives in usage, not in the dictionary.
- Κοίταξέ με στα μάτια όταν σου μιλάω.Look me in the eye when I’m talking to you.
- Βλέπω ότι κάτι σε απασχολεί.I can see something’s bothering you.
- Ξέρω ότι έχεις δίκιο, αλλά δεν γνωρίζω τον άνθρωπο προσωπικά.I know you’re right, but I don’t know the man personally.
- Άκουσα έναν θόρυβο, αλλά δεν άκουσα τι μου είπες.I heard a noise, but I didn’t catch what you said to me.
Collocations: words come in pairs
Greek says παίρνω τηλέφωνο (make a call), κάνω μπάνιο, βγάζω φωτογραφία, πιάνω δουλειά, ρίχνω μια ματιά, βάζω τα δυνατά μου. The verb is unpredictable from English — learn the whole pair, never the noun alone.
- Θα σε πάρω τηλέφωνο το βράδυ.I’ll give you a call this evening.
- Ρίξε μια ματιά στο κείμενο πριν το στείλουμε.Take a look at the text before we send it.
- Έβαλα τα δυνατά μου, αλλά δεν πρόλαβα.I did my best, but I didn’t make it in time.

Често задавани въпроси
What does γλώσσα mean in Greek?
Three things, depending on context: the organ («Έκαψα τη γλώσσα μου με τον καφέ», I burnt my tongue), the spoken language («Η ελληνική γλώσσα έχει ιστορία τριών χιλιάδων ετών») and the fish, sole («Παραγγείλαμε γλώσσα στα κάρβουνα»).
What is the difference between ξέρω and γνωρίζω?
«Ξέρω» is about a fact, «γνωρίζω» about being acquainted, and it is more formal: «Ξέρω ότι έχεις δίκιο, αλλά δεν γνωρίζω τον άνθρωπο προσωπικά» (I know you are right, but I do not know the man personally). The same nuance separates «κοιτάζω» (look) from «βλέπω» (see).
Why should Greek collocations be learned in pairs?
Because the verb is unpredictable from another language: Greek says «παίρνω τηλέφωνο» (make a call), «κάνω μπάνιο», «βγάζω φωτογραφία», «ρίχνω μια ματιά» (take a look). Learning the noun alone is never enough.
