Comparatives and superlatives, the full picture

Adjectives: two comparatives, one meaning

πιο + adjective (always safe) or -τερος (more polished): πιο ωραίος = ωραιότερος, πιο μεγάλος = μεγαλύτερος, πιο γρήγορος = γρηγορότερος. The second term arrives with από: Είναι ωραιότερος από τον άλλο. FORBIDDEN: πιο ωραιότερος.

  • Ο αδερφός μου είναι μεγαλύτερος από εμένα.My brother is older than me.
  • Αυτός ο δρόμος είναι πιο γρήγορος.This road is faster.
  • Είναι ωραιότερος από τον άλλο.It’s nicer than the other one.

The two superlatives

The RELATIVE compares within a group and takes the article: Είναι ο καλύτερος μαθητής της τάξης. The ABSOLUTE means “extremely” without comparing anyone: ωραιότατος = πολύ ωραίος, ευτυχέστατος. Everyday speech prefers πολύ; -ότατος stays written or emphatic.

  • Είναι ο καλύτερος μαθητής της τάξης.He’s the best student in the class.
  • Είναι η πιο ακριβή περιοχή της πόλης.It’s the most expensive area in the city.
  • Ήταν μια ωραιότατη βραδιά.It was a most delightful evening.
  • Πέρασα μια πολύ ωραία μέρα.I had a really lovely day.

Adverbs follow — with one surprise

πιο γρήγορα = γρηγορότερα, πιο εύκολα = ευκολότερα, πιο συχνά = συχνότερα. The surprise: the adverbial superlative ends in -ότατα, or is simply said with πολύ / πάρα πολύ. And the irregulars keep their forms: καλά → καλύτερα, άσχημα → χειρότερα, πολύ → περισσότερο, λίγο → λιγότερο.

  • Τώρα γράφω πιο γρήγορα από πριν.I write faster now than before.
  • Τα καταφέραμε ευκολότερα απ’ ό,τι νομίζαμε.We managed it more easily than we expected.
  • Τον βλέπω συχνότερα τώρα.I see him more often now.
  • Σήμερα νιώθω καλύτερα.I feel better today.

Choose the correct form.

Често задавани въпроси

Should you say «πιο ωραίος» or «ωραιότερος»?

Both are correct and mean the same: «πιο» + adjective (always safe) or the -τερος form (more polished) — «πιο μεγάλος = μεγαλύτερος». The second term arrives with «από»: «Είναι ωραιότερος από τον άλλο». Forbidden, though: «πιο ωραιότερος», which stacks two comparatives.

What is the difference between the relative and the absolute superlative in Greek?

The relative one compares within a group and takes the article: «Είναι ο καλύτερος μαθητής της τάξης» (he is the best pupil in the class). The absolute means extremely, without comparing anyone: «ωραιότατος» = «πολύ ωραίος», «Ήταν μια ωραιότατη βραδιά». Everyday speech prefers «πολύ».

How do you make the comparative of an adverb in Greek?

As with adjectives, two routes: «πιο γρήγορα = γρηγορότερα», «πιο εύκολα = ευκολότερα», «πιο συχνά = συχνότερα». The irregulars keep their own forms: «καλά → καλύτερα», «άσχημα → χειρότερα», «πολύ → περισσότερο», «λίγο → λιγότερο». «Τώρα γράφω πιο γρήγορα από πριν» (now I write faster than before).
