Where Greek words come from
Three thousand years of history in the lexicon: inherited words, Turkish, Italian and French loans — and Greek words that came home from abroad.
Inheritance and loans
The inherited core descends directly from Ancient Greek: νερό (< νηρόν), ψωμί, σπίτι (< ὁσπίτιον < Latin hospitium). Every era left its layer: Latin, Venetian, Turkish, French, English.
- Ήπιαμε καφέ και φάγαμε μπακλαβά στην αυλή.We drank coffee and ate baklava in the courtyard.
- Άνοιξε την πόρτα και ανέβηκε τη σκάλα.She opened the door and went up the stairs.
- Το ασανσέρ χάλασε πάλι, οπότε ανεβήκαμε με τα πόδια.The lift broke down again, so we walked up.
- Στο τραπέζι υπήρχε μόνο ψωμί, νερό και λίγο τυρί.On the table there was only bread, water and a little cheese.

The round-trip words
The αντιδάνεια leave Greek and come home transformed: καναπές (< It. canapè, ultimately from κωνώπιον), σενάριο (< Lat. scaenarium < σκηνή). And the reverse: the whole world speaks Greek unknowingly — τηλέφωνο, δημοκρατία, φιλοσοφία are exports.
- Κάθισε στον καναπέ και άνοιξε την τηλεόραση.He sat down on the sofa and turned on the television.
- Το σενάριο της ταινίας γράφτηκε μέσα σε μία εβδομάδα.The film’s screenplay was written in a week.
- Σε όποια γλώσσα και να μιλήσεις, το τηλέφωνο παραμένει «τηλέφωνο».Whatever language you speak, the telephone is still «τηλέφωνο».
Why this matters at Γ1
Origin predicts register: the Turkish loan is warm and colloquial (κέφι, μεράκι), the learned doublet is administrative. Knowing γεύση and Italian gusto are cousins helps memory; knowing ιατρός is the learned twin of γιατρός helps style.
