Highlighting: clefts and dislocations
Εγώ ήμουν που τηλεφώνησα · Τον Νίκο τον είδα χθες: the constructions that point a spotlight at a single word.

The cleft: αυτός ήταν που…
To isolate the one responsible: Εγώ ήμουν που σου τηλεφώνησα (it was ME who called you), Η Μαρία είναι που ξέρει τα καλά μέρη. The verb είμαι agrees with the highlighted element.
- Εγώ σου τηλεφώνησα χθες.I phoned you yesterday.
- Εγώ ήμουν που σου τηλεφώνησα χθες.I’m the one who phoned you yesterday.
- Χθες ήταν που σου τηλεφώνησα, όχι προχθές.It was yesterday that I phoned you, not the day before.
Dislocation: Τον Νίκο τον είδα
The object moves to the front AND doubles with a pronoun: Τον Νίκο τον είδα χθες (as for Nikos, I saw him yesterday). The doubling (τον… τον…) is obligatory — without it the sentence becomes raw contrastive stress. Same with the genitive: Της Μαρίας της αρέσει ο χορός.
- Είδα τον Νίκο χθες.I saw Nikos yesterday.
- Τον Νίκο τον είδα χθες.Nikos — him I saw yesterday.
- Χθες τον είδα τον Νίκο.Yesterday I saw him, Nikos.
Emphatic concession: ό,τι κι αν, και να
Ό,τι κι αν πεις, δεν αλλάζω γνώμη (whatever you say…). Όσο κι αν προσπάθησα, δεν τα κατάφερα (however hard I tried…). Και να θέλω, δεν μπορώ (even if I wanted to…). These turns are the salt of Γ2 oral argumentation.
- Ό,τι κι αν πεις, δεν αλλάζω γνώμη.Whatever you say, I’m not changing my mind.
- Όσο κι αν επιμείνεις, δεν αλλάζω γνώμη.However much you insist, I’m not changing my mind.
- Και να θέλω, δεν μπορώ να αλλάξω γνώμη.Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t change my mind.

How do I say “it was ME who called” in Greek?
With a cleft: «Εγώ ήμουν που σου τηλεφώνησα». The verb «είμαι» agrees with the highlighted element: «Χθες ήταν που σου τηλεφώνησα» (it was yesterday that I called you).
Why does «Τον Νίκο τον είδα» have the pronoun twice?
That is dislocation: the object moves to the front and is doubled by a clitic — «Τον Νίκο τον είδα χθες» (as for Nikos, I saw him yesterday). The doubling is obligatory; the same happens in the genitive: «Της Μαρίας της αρέσει ο χορός».
How do I say “whatever you say, I won’t change my mind”?
«Ό,τι κι αν πεις, δεν αλλάζω γνώμη». The same mould gives the other concessives: «Όσο κι αν προσπάθησα…» (however hard I tried), «Και να θέλω, δεν μπορώ» (even if I wanted to, I can’t).
