Building words: prefixes and compounding
ξαναγράφω, ανεβοκατεβαίνω, ασπρόμαυρος: three word-machines — the prefix, the -ο- weld, and the multi-word compound.

The prefixes that do the work
A prefix changes meaning without touching the conjugation: ξανα- (again: ξαναδιαβάζω), παρα- (too much: παρατρώω), ανα- (re-: αναθεωρώ), υπερ- (beyond: υπερβάλλω), αντι- (against: αντιδρώ), προ- (before: προβλέπω), α-/αν- (without: άγνωστος, ανώμαλος), δυσ-/ευ- (badly/well: δύσκολος, ευτυχής), ημι- (half: ημικύκλιο).
- Ξαναδιάβασα το γράμμα τρεις φορές.I reread the letter three times.
- Μην υπερβάλλεις, δεν ήταν τόσο άσχημα.Don’t exaggerate, it wasn’t that bad.
- Με πήρε τηλέφωνο ένας άγνωστος αριθμός.An unknown number called me.
- Κανείς δεν πρόβλεψε αυτή την κρίση.Nobody predicted this crisis.
| πρόθημα | σημασία | παράδειγμα |
|---|---|---|
| ξανα- | πάλι | ξαναγράφω |
| παρα- | υπερβολικά | παρατρώω |
| αντι- | ενάντια | αντιδρώ |
| προ- | πριν | προβλέπω |
| α- / αν- | χωρίς | άγνωστος, ανώμαλος |
| ευ- / δυσ- | καλά / δύσκολα | ευτυχής, δύσκολος |
The -ο- weld
Two full words join through -ο-: ασπρόμαυρος (white + black), γλυκόξινος, ανεβοκατεβαίνω, νυχτοπούλι, ψαρόσουπα, μικρόσωμος. The first drops its ending and the stress often shifts rightwards: θάλασσα + ταραχή → θαλασσοταραχή.
- Έβγαλα μια ασπρόμαυρη φωτογραφία.I took a black-and-white photo.
- Μου αρέσει η ψαρόσουπα της γιαγιάς.I love my grandmother’s fish soup.
- Το ασανσέρ ανεβοκατεβαίνει όλη μέρα.The lift goes up and down all day.
- Λόγω θαλασσοταραχής το πλοίο δεν έφυγε.The ship didn’t sail because of the rough sea.
Multi-word compounds
Two words keep their autonomy but name one thing: παιδικός σταθμός (nursery), λαϊκή αγορά (street market), ψυχρός πόλεμος, γαλάζιο αίμα, κινητό τηλέφωνο. Both parts decline: του παιδικού σταθμού.
- Αφήνω το παιδί στον παιδικό σταθμό κάθε πρωί.I drop my child off at the nursery every morning.
- Η δασκάλα του παιδικού σταθμού είναι υπέροχη.The nursery teacher is wonderful.
- Κάθε Σάββατο ψωνίζω φρούτα στη λαϊκή αγορά.Every Saturday I buy fruit at the street market.
- Ξέχασα το κινητό μου τηλέφωνο στο αυτοκίνητο.I left my mobile phone in the car.
