Using the cases: accusative and genitive
At Β1 you could form the cases. At Γ1 you choose which one to use — and that is where correct and natural part ways.

What the accusative does
Far beyond the direct object: the accusative carries duration, measure, price, destination and a crowd of adverbials. It is Modern Greek’s default case — when in doubt after a preposition, it is almost always this one.
- Έμεινα τρεις μέρες στη Θεσσαλονίκη.I stayed three days in Thessaloniki.
- Θα έρθω το Σάββατο το απόγευμα.I’ll come on Saturday afternoon.
- Το εισιτήριο κοστίζει δώδεκα ευρώ.The ticket costs twelve euros.
- Πάμε βόλτα στην παλιά πόλη;Shall we go for a walk in the old town?

What the genitive does
Possession, part of a whole, quality, time («του χρόνου»), and above all the indirect object: «του έδωσα το βιβλίο». That last use is the one learners wrongly replace with «σε».
- Δεν βρίσκω τα κλειδιά του αυτοκινήτου.I can’t find the car keys.
- Ήπιαμε ένα ποτήρι κρασιού πριν από το φαγητό.We had a glass of wine before the meal.
- Του έδωσα το βιβλίο χθες το βράδυ.I gave him the book last night.

Genitive or «σε»?
With a pronoun the genitive is obligatory: «του μίλησα», never «μίλησα σε αυτόν» except for emphasis. With a noun both exist: «έδωσα το βιβλίο του Νίκου» (rare, ambiguous with possession) versus «έδωσα το βιβλίο στον Νίκο» (normal). Safe rule: pronoun → genitive; noun → σε.

What can the accusative express beyond the direct object?
Duration, measure, price, destination and a crowd of adverbials: «Έμεινα τρεις μέρες στη Θεσσαλονίκη» (I stayed three days), «Το εισιτήριο κοστίζει δώδεκα ευρώ» (the ticket costs twelve euros), «Θα έρθω το Σάββατο το απόγευμα». It is Modern Greek’s default case.
What does the genitive do in Modern Greek?
Possession, part of a whole, quality, time («του χρόνου») and above all the indirect object: «Του έδωσα το βιβλίο χθες το βράδυ» (I gave him the book last night). That last use is the one learners wrongly replace with «σε».
Genitive or «σε» for the indirect object?
Safe rule: pronoun → genitive, noun → «σε». Say «του μίλησα» rather than «μίλησα σε αυτόν» (except for emphasis), but «έδωσα το βιβλίο στον Νίκο» rather than «του Νίκου», which would be confused with possession.
