Aspect: θα γράφω or θα γράψω?

Two stems, two viewpoints

The present stem (γράφ-) views the action as ongoing or repeated; the aorist stem (γράψ-) views it as a whole. This contrast — imperfective / perfective — runs through the future, the subjunctive and the imperative. You already know it from the παρατατικός / αόριστος pair.

• Κάθε βράδυ έγραφα στο ημερολόγιό μου.Every evening I wrote in my diary.
• Χθες έγραψα τρία γράμματα.Yesterday I wrote three letters.
• Θέλω να μείνω εδώ έναν μήνα.I want to stay here for a month.

After θα

θα γράψω = I’ll write (once, completed): Αύριο θα γράψω το email. θα γράφω = I’ll be writing / write regularly: Κάθε μέρα θα σου γράφω. The choice changes the meaning, not the verb’s translation.

• Αύριο θα γράψω το μήνυμα.Tomorrow I’ll write the message.
• Κάθε μέρα θα σου γράφω.I’ll write to you every day.
• Θα διαβάσω το βιβλίο μέσα σε μια βδομάδα.I’ll read the book in a week.

After να and in the imperative

Same logic: Θέλω να γράψω ένα βιβλίο (one specific project) / Μου αρέσει να γράφω (in general). Imperative: Γράψε την απάντηση! (do it now) / Γράφε μου! (write to me regularly). Aspect permeates the whole Greek verb.

• Θέλω να γράψω ένα βιβλίο.I want to write a book.
• Μου αρέσει να γράφω.I like writing.
• Γράψε την απάντηση εδώ!Write the answer here!
• Γράφε μου συχνά!Write to me often!

The full table of the eight tenses

Two axes are enough to file the WHOLE Greek verb system: the time band (past / present / future) and the ποιόν ενέργειας (continuous-repeated, one-off, completed). Each cell gives one tense, active and passive.

• Έγραφα όταν χτύπησε το τηλέφωνο.I was writing when the phone rang.
• Έγραψα το γράμμα και το έστειλα.I wrote the letter and sent it.
• Μέχρι τη Δευτέρα θα έχω γράψει την έκθεση.By Monday I will have written the report.
