The six adverbial clauses

Cause, result, purpose, condition, time, concession — each relation has its own conjunctions and its own mood. This is the skeleton of any argued text.

The six adverbial clauses

Cause and result

Cause: επειδή (neutral, can open), γιατί (spoken, never opens), καθώς, αφού, δεδομένου ότι (formal). Result: ώστε + indicative for an actual outcome, ώστε να + subjunctive for an intended one — the distinction essays most often miss.

He didn’t come because he fell ill.
He got so tired that he fell asleep in the armchair.
He spoke slowly so that everyone would understand him.
Given that the deadline has passed, the application will not be considered.

Purpose, condition

Purpose: για να, να, ώστε να — always subjunctive, never indicative. Condition: three types by degree of reality. The third — αν είχα … θα είχα — is what separates a Γ1 writer from a Β2 one.

He left earlier in order to make it to the meeting.
If it rains, we’ll stay inside.
If I had time, I would come with you.
If I had read the notice, I would have understood the problem.

Time and concession

Watch πριν να + subjunctive against αφού + indicative. Concession: αν και, παρόλο που, μολονότι (formal), και ας. A concessive states a fact that should have blocked the main clause — and did not.

Which conjunctions express cause in Greek?

«Επειδή» is neutral and may open the sentence, «γιατί» is spoken and never opens it, «καθώς» and «αφού» are common, «δεδομένου ότι» is formal: «Δεν ήρθε επειδή αρρώστησε» (he didn’t come because he fell ill).

What is the difference between ώστε + indicative and ώστε να + subjunctive?

The indicative gives an actual outcome, the subjunctive an intended one: «Κουράστηκε τόσο, ώστε αποκοιμήθηκε στην πολυθρόνα» (so tired that he fell asleep) versus «Μίλησε αργά, ώστε να τον καταλάβουν όλοι» (he spoke slowly so that everyone would understand).

How do you form the unreal conditional in Greek?

With «αν» + imperfect in the clause and «θα» + imperfect in the main sentence: «Αν είχα χρόνο, θα ερχόμουν μαζί σας» (if I had time, I would come with you). This type is what separates a Γ1 writer from a Β2 one.
